can't get upscaling to work in Vegas Pro 20

Frank-Bee wrote on 11/8/2022, 1:29 AM

I just bought and installed Vegas Pro 20, and I also installed the Deep Learning Models (version 20.2.0.0), but If I try to run 'upscaling' on my old DV material I get the message that the media cannot be upscaled because the upscaling model is not present on my system and that I have to download it.

Since I posted this in the wrong thread ( https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-pro-19-vegas-ai-bundle--134896/ ) I got some useful replies, but I still can't get it to work.

What I've noticed is that I can't use the slider:

What I fear now is that this upscaling fx is AGAIN something that is only available for 365 subscription........

And nowhere a tutorial or instructional video to be found on how the upscaling works. That doesn't help either.

Please refer to the recommended computer specifications needed to properly run Vegas Pro 20 (and the DLMs): https://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/us/specifications/#productMenu

If your computer does not meet these specifications - especially by generations - this could very possibly be the reason that Upscale is not working. When the original DLMs were released just over 2 years ago with Vegas Pro 18, none of the DLM AI FX worked for me at the time because my then editing computer did not meet the minimum recommended specs/

Upscaling and the other DLM AI FX definitely work in the purchased versions of Vegas Pro as well as in the 365 versions.

Another possibility ... are you using GoPro HEVC video? If yes, try unchecking 'Enable legacy HEVC decoding' (if it is checked) in the File I/O tab in Options/Preferences.

That should be OK isn't it?

The material I use is old SD in .avi format 720x576
I tried both project settings: first, when importing the material in Vegas I let Vegas use the same settings as the source material. I also tried with project settings set to 1280x720

In both cases I get the warning: 'the media cannot be upscaled because the upscaling model is not present on your system. Please install the Vegas AI bundle, which you can download at www.vegascreativesoftware.com'

And in both cases the scaling cannot be operated.

I downloaded and installed Vegas pro 20 and Deep Learning Models (version 20.2.0.0) twice, but still it doesn't work.

Frank, you may wish to check that you do in fact have the 20.2.0.0 version installed. You can check by looking in the registry:

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MAGIX\VEGAS_Pro_20_Deep_Learning_Models" to check the value of "Version".

Some users have found that it has not been updated to 20.2.0.0 even after downloading the newer version.

Andy,

I checked the register and it is 20.2.0.0 so that is all right.

Howard-Vigorita wrote on 11/8/2022, 10:41 AM

Also make sure your Intel graphics drivers are updated using Intel's driver update page ... the DLM uses an Intel igpu if it is detected. If you're not sure what version you have, the Vegas help driver-update will tell you but you need to go to Intel to check for updates for the 9700k igpu.

No problems here, using VP20 build 214

Note that my computer does not meet minimum 4K specifications for RAM or GPU, so it takes a long time.

Some tips:

  • Set your project properties to match the output, not source; i.e., resolution, aspect, progressive.
  • Your AVI is probably interlaced. Use Smart Deinterlace in project properties.
  • Apply the Upscale filter as a Media Effect.
  • Here's the result (inset is the original):
Frank-Bee wrote on 11/8/2022, 12:07 PM

Hi Howard, I am going to look into this with the help of my son. Windows says my drivers are up to date, but I believe that is not always the case....

Musicvid, thanks for the tips. After checking the intel drivers I will do some testing with your tips.
I de-interlaced my .avi files, but not with Smart Deinterlacing, but just in the project settings.

Musicvid wrote on 11/8/2022, 12:51 PM

That may not work as well.

I can get that error when project resolution is the same as media resolution . it results in scale set to 1 and the error about the models not being loaded. Try increasing your project resolution first, then add the upscale, the upscale figure should automatically populate to the correct value, the difference between media resolution and project resolution.

If that doesn't work, then you have the Vegas AI model bug, where it can't see the models. Try another AI FX to check if that's correct.

Btw I tried an old free upscaler and compared it to Vegas. it's approx a 2.3x upscale. Vegas is on right, Video2x is on the left. You can see Vegas has a huge problem with noisy footage, while Video2x is able to moderate the noise somewhat. Video2x is 0.7fps in this example, compared to about 6fps with Vegas, even though Video2x uses 100% GPU, while Vegas uses only CPU.

Former user wrote on 11/8/2022, 10:47 PM

As a further comparison this is topaz upscale, which might be the sharpest and cleanest but it has the topaz plastic skin look which is a problem. It processed at the same speed as Vegas, 6fps

Frank-Bee wrote on 11/9/2022, 2:45 AM

Hi all,
I did some testing:

1) took an interlaced fragment form a DVD (all my other material was already de-interlaced but the end result is the same with interlaced or de-interlaced material)
2) project properties set at:

3) imported the fragment in Vegas
4) applied these settings in upscale:

5) rendered with these settings:

Result after rendering (same frames, before and after)

Hi Todd,
this gives me a good insight in what the possibilities are! As you can see above I did some testing with the right settings (I hope) and it still doesn't work.........

What I did find out was that another AI fx did work OK. I tried Style Transfer and that worked fine.

@Frank-Bee If you disable the IGPU, turning it off in bios or disabling it in Device Manager, does Upscale then work as expected?

hi j-v,

I tried event fx first, now I tried Media fx. No weird screens with media fx. And with media fx you can use the slider, which otherwise wasn't possible.

However, with the scaling turned up to maximum (4) there is no difference to be seen between original and upscaled.

On this screen I see that your Intel GPU 630 as part of the CPU is not visible.
Probably it can not being used because it is not allowed in the BIOS of your computer.
Try to allow it yourself or something else.
BIOS has to be opened and set to allow the Intel Graphics to be shown and used.
After that you have to install the latest drivers for that GPU from the Intell website, drivernumber gfx win 101.3729.101.2114.
After that your Help/ Check for Driver Updates has to look like this

1, meaningful is, you do UHD project. Your eye can't observe really, the render result proofs.

2, Upscale into even, must stay direct behind Pan/Crop for a sec. then go ahead Pan/Crop, if failed move it back and again forth; jump over doesn't work!
