Can't import vp61 codec videos into VEGAS PRO 18?

joe-winko wrote on 10/3/2024, 8:43 AM

I'm trying to import video clips that I filmed in the Sims 2 into Sony Vegas Pro 18 but it's not letting me drag & drop them into the timeline at all. It isn't giving me an error message, it just simply isn't letting me drag & drop the clips into the timeline.

I believe this is caused by a codec error.

the clips worked on earlier versions of sony vegas that i was using after i installed the codec (it's been so long though, im not 100% sure if this is the codec but im pretty sure it is) vp6 codec (or as it's also called vp61 codec)

the files are all in avi format.

I remember I had to do stuff to get the videos to import into Sony Vegas 13 but i cant remember exactly what I did because it's been so long ago, BUT HERE IS WHAT I TRIED DOING SO FAR TO GET THEM INTO VEGAS 18:

I copied & pasted the files vp6, vp6install, & vp6vfw into the Sony Vegas 18 directory & tried restarting my computer but it's still not working...

Is there a way I can enable this codec to work in Sony Vegas 18 so I can drag & drop these videos into the timeline?
PLEASE HELP ♥

You cannot install a codec by pasting files into a Vegas Directory.

You must instead run the Installer application, often an .exe file.

If your codec is compatible with your version of Vegas, the "vfw" designation indicates that it will install as an AVI "Video for Windows" encoder.

That said, I have no idea what a "vp6" codec is. Certainly not something we run into every day.

it was compatible with sony vegas 13 but it isnt working with sony vegas 18. is there any way to enable backwards compatibility or something like that?

If someone here doesn't have specific experience with that vfw codec on your Vegas version, then your best bet is to contact the codec developer. I see that the original developer, On2, has been acquired by Google. Good Luck!

Please use the correct branding for VEGAS Pro 18. Sony is not involved.

If you can't find a VFW installer for VP6 (and get it to work with VEGAS), can other software like ShutterEncoder or Handbrake convert it to a more contemporary format?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VP6 is ancient.

files vp6, vp6install, & vp6vfw

@joe-winko Did you do what @mark-y suggested and try running the "vp6install" file if it's an exe file to install the codec. You need to do this outside of Vegas.

i really Do Not want to have to convert every single video. sims 2 records videos with that codec and i want to be able to use them in vegas 18 right away without having to convert them. it makes no sense how it worked in vegas 13 but not in vegas 18.

It makes plenty of sense- you figured out how to install the codec before and now have to do it again.

it's not working on my windows 11 computer when i run the exe. i click on it and nothing happens. i added the registry & the videos recorded in the sims 2 play fine on my computer and also play fine in my vegas 11 program i have, but they just arent working in vegas 18

Does the installer here work? You may have to right-click and run as an administrator. You may also have to run it in a compatibility mode as it came out in the era of Windows XP (right click on the exe).

Or maybe it just won't work on modern Windows and then you're back to converting the videos in batch or editing in VP 13 on an old system.
