Can't render due to low memory

LarryN wrote on 5/23/2013, 9:18 AM
I have an HP Pavilion PC with a 64 bit 6 core processor and 9 GB of RAM running on Windows 7. I also have a 1.5 TB hard drive with over 1 TB of free space. So, why am I not able to render my movie?

I'm using VMS HD Platinum version 10 build 179. I bought this software just a couple of years ago and Sony says they no longer support it.

Please advise. Thanks!

Larry,
Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10 is still a 32-bit application, so this applies
A 32 bit application installed to a 64 bit OS is running up against a built-in memory limitation, the same of which would be enforced by a 32 bit OS. Current and previous 32 bit versions of Microsoft Windows can only allocate a maximum of 2 GB of memory to each running process, regardless how much real or virtual memory is available on a particular machine.

Thank you so much for your help! I should have known to check the specifications before I loaded it on my new PC. I was using the program on my other PC running XP. I just checked the box and it didn't say anything about a 64 bit system. It's amazing that it ran okay until I wanted to render it.

Larry,
you should be able to use VMS Plat 10 with your new PC though.
See e.g. the three SCS KB articles ("custcenter") in the linked forum thread for possible solutions.

You'll have to forgive me, but I'm not seeing the three SCS KB articles ("custcenter") . Are they selectable locations that I can open to view?

Again, I really appreciate your help!

You might also consider downloading and installing the time-limited fully functional trial version of Movie Studio Platinum 12 (64-bit) to see how it would help.

Thanks for your suggestion! I'm convinced now that having the 64 bit version will solve the low memory problems. I am going to purchase the 64 bit version and do a full new installation.

Hopefully, everything that I've created in the timeline ".vf file" will be compatible with the new program. I've been working on this video since November of last year, so I'm hoping that all goes well.

Thanks again!
Larry

Larry,
MSP 12 will accept your v10 projects, but
when using the 64-bit version of Movie Studio, third-party plug-ins will work only if they are 64-bit plug-ins. Please check with the plug-in vendor for available updates. You can share projects between 32- and 64-bit versions of Movie Studio installations, performing editing as needed in 32-bit Movie Studio and finishing the project in 64-bit Movie Studio.
You can have both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of v12 (the purchase includes both versions) installed as well as v10 at the same time.

So, why am I not able to render my movie?

It usually helps to give details about your project and media properties. While trialing v12 is good, it still would be nice to know why v10 is having a problem with it.

True. A lot of high-resolution still images in the timeline may be one reason. This is mentioned in the linked "low memory" thread and also in the linked KB article 4168, which has several other ideas as well.
