Considering upgrade fromVegas Pro 16 to VegasPro 20

garuda wrote on 8/26/2022, 3:19 PM

I currently have Vegas Pro 16 (Lifetime standalone version). Magix sent me an offer to UPGRADE from VegPro 16 to VegPro 20 Upgrade version (just released) for $199. This sounds strange since the full version of VegasPro 20 is $600. 1) Is the VP 20 Upgrade a full standalone version just like my VP 16? Or does the VP20 update the VP16? 2) Can I have both VP16 and VP20 installed on the same computer? 3) When I buy the VP20 Upgrade, is it the exact same version and content as the $600 Vegas Pro 20?

@garuda

1) Upgrades are full versions and separate installations. They don't "update" previous versions.

2) Your previous version remains as it is and you can have both installed simultaneously.

3) Is it the exact same version. Upgrades are offered at significantly lower prices for previous version owners. New licenses just cost more. All purchase packages (see below) have the same VEGAS Pro core program.

VEGAS Pro 20 is included and sold in three different "purchase packages": VEGAS Edit/Pro/Post. Please see the product pages at https://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/us/ (or your area's version of that URL, e.g. /int/ or /de/ etc.) There are also the subscription options available (monthly and annual with yearly payment) besides the perpetual (one-time purchase) license.

If you purchase the upgrade or full version it's still a lifetime license, and you can keep both installed (or use them on different computers even). And yes, the upgrade and full version are the same, the upgrade is just a discount based on you already owning Vegas (your eligibility will be verified during the purchase).

WITH THAT SAID - based on the pricing you mention, I think you're confusing Pro with Post. There are 3 versions of Vegas with different feature levels. Edit at $119/249, Pro at $199/399, and Post at $299/599. If you buy the upgrade to Pro at $199, it is the same as the $400 version, not the $600 version.

Just to add to the confusion (and this really is stupid) all three versions come with the "Vegas Pro" application. So technically there's Vegas Pro - Edit Edition, Vegas Pro - Pro Edition, and Vegas Pro - Post Edition. Yeah, that's super clear marketing.

Thanks vkmast and daniel-t! As Daniel pointed out, the marketing strategy and prod descriptions can be confusing; oftentimes I’m more confused AFTER reading all the Magix hype --- which is why I tend to bother you guys on the forum to get the straight scoop. I’m fairly new to Vegas, since predominately used Premiere for many years, but can’t justify the price of latest Adobe Suite and categorically refuse to buy subscriptions (which only Adobe offers). So I had to switch to Vegas; though regret loosing CS6 After Effects after spending 130 years learning how to use it. Thanks again to you both for your prompt replies.

I forgot to ask.... will the Vegas Pro 20 accept and process .mkv files?

@garuda Hi, unless someone replies that Vegas won't accept it, can you share an MKV file on Google Drive, I'll try it, ?

I'm on V19 rather than V20 but if you go to Preferences > File I/O and tick Enable MKV Reader (Experimental) you should be OK.

I tried MKV's a while back, possibly on V18 when I was curious to know how people convert commercial Bluray and DVD feature films. A free app converted the films I tried to MKV's. I then brought these into Vegas and rendered them in MP4 H264's. Having completed the experiment I then deleted everything so I cannot refer to any actual files.

@garuda I just did as @Peter-Riding mentioned, I converted an MP4 into an MKV file with Handbrake, ticked Enable MKV Reader in Preferences - File I/O in VP20 & the file played no problem, whether your MKV is the same & will play ok I don't know, perhaps download the Trial of VP20 & see or like i say share a file & i'll try it for you 👍

Thanks Gid and Peter! My VP16 won't be show mkv files in the Import window/dialog. So, based on both your replies, the fact that VP20 sees the mkv file (and Preferences can Enable) suggests it likely will process it; and since Gid had luck with at least one mkv, sheds the likelihood. Thanks again guys!

@garuda Try the trial first, Vegas System requirements says Windows 10 | 11 & your Signature says Windows 7.

Hi Gid, thanks for suggestions. I have purchased VP20, mostly to have the most current functionality for file formats, bells&whistles, etc. I have tested the mkv import capability, and found that VP20 recognizes mkv files but will not import to media/timeline. However, not really a big issue since converter programs are available. I needed VP20 for my Sony a7Riv cam files at 4K and 8K (VP16 is too old for newer technology).

I must update my signature for my workstation computer to Win-10. I still have two swap-able C-drives -- one with Win7 and other with Win10. I keep Win7 C-drive when needing my standalone older soft apps that will not run on Win10; ie. CorelDraw, etc. I don't buy subscriptions for workstation because it never goes online with internet for security reasons. I use the dual-socket Xeons and Titan GPU workstation for heavy lifting; else my Sager I-7 cpu laptop for internet and small/quick stuff.

I haven't yet installed VP20 on my Xeon workstation, so does anyone know if VP20 uses all 16 cores (32 threads) like Premiere does?

Did you selected this for your mkv files?

Just for completeness, I've just found the app I had used to test proprietary DVDs and Blurays making MKVs. Its called MakeMKV and includes an active forum. As I say I was able to import MKV files into Vegas and render to MP4. I would have been on Windows 10 at the time and either Vegas 18 or 19 with the "Enable" function ticked. I probably used Handbrake as well.

If you miss using After effects, you should get Vegas Post, it comes with Vegas effects, which is very similar to After effects. If you're familiar with After effects and how it works, you will be right at home in Vegas Effects.

JV: Yes, my “Enable MKV Reader” was already enabled per Peter’s earlier suggestion. I’ll just use Converters until Magix refines 20, or someone here finds a better workaround within VP20. Also JV, nice easy-to-follow JPG attachment showing dialog for to the Enable MKV selection with arrows to panels.

Peter: Thanks for link. I’ll check that out. I’ve tried a half dozen converters, but most fail converting certain mkv files, while others fail if file is too big (over 100MB). I’m going to try Handbrake next. If I discover an easier/better resolve, I’ll certainly share it with you guys on this forum.

fr0sty: Interestingly, while researching the Magix marketing blurbs for both VP20 & VP Post, I didn’t see the Vegas Effects feature listed for Post. And I have already pulled the trigger on VegasPro 20. However, in my earlier post when I stated my regretting the loss of After Effects (AE), I was not entirely thorough enough; because I didn’t mention that I still have After Effects CS6 on my swappable Win7 C-drive on workstation. But my 2nd copy of VP20 will be installed on the Xeon workstation’s Win10 C-drive. Therefore, it’s a bit of a pain swapping back-and-forth between Win7 & Win 10 drives when in the middle of editing with VP20 on the Win10 drive. Earlier, I was mostly complaining about not having AE on the same drive as VP20. I’m now getting old and decrepit so these minor inconveniences are annoying sometimes.
