Difference between Platinum and Suite?

BWX232 wrote on 5/25/2020, 11:20 PM

In the comparison chart it says only difference is the "FXhome Ignite Advanced VFX Pack" But then it does not list what exactly is in that pack anywhere. Is there any other difference and what is in that FXHome pack? Video it points to does not give a list and I couldn't find it on FXHome website either. What will I gain over movie Studio Platinum 16?

If you installed the free FXhome stuff on your VMS16 and it works fine 4U, I don't think there is any major breakthrough in VMS17.

BWX232 wrote on 5/26/2020, 12:10 AM

So I won't lose anything (the FX) when upgrading? I won't gain anything by upgrading to 17 Suite over 17 Platinum? This makes no sense.

This is all very vague with these upgrades and what they actually are and what will happen if you install upgrade over older version you already have; what you will lose, what you will gain, etc.. How about a dang list MAGIX? Would it be that hard? 🤷‍♂️

They list a FX pack as the major upgrade that about doubles the price but do not tell you what's in it, but instead point to a video which is equally vague and lacks any real info. I mean just tell me what I am buying before I buy. 🙄

If the info is there, it is hiding 8 layers deep somewhere.

Oh I just found something I did not see before- Down t the bottom of page:
https://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/us/newsletter/upgrade-vegas-movie-studio/features/#productMenu

"FXhome Ignite Advanced VFX Pack Gunfire pack, Beautify, VFX: Damage, VFX: Retro, Color: Starter

Enhance your movies with effects and filters that look like they were made for a Hollywood blockbuster. With 16 of FXhome most stunning effects, you will give your videos a unique, pro-level look. For example, add shadows and highlights to create the perfect mood for the scene.

Exclusively in Suite"

Notice it still does not give a complete list of the added FX you get when you spend almost double on the SUITE version. I may want some I may not but hard to know when it's a big secret.

What are the "16 of FXhome most stunning effects" Magix? Is there a list somewhere? Maybe even examples of what they do? 🤷‍♂️

OK. FX are listed in the product pages as you found out, but presets are not. I assume the short video there did not help you either.

BWX232 wrote on 5/26/2020, 6:16 AM

It says there are 16 effects that you get with Suite over Platinum. Video is absolutely no help at all. Product page lists a few as I mentioned above but not a complete list of differences. I think I understand what you mean by presets now. They must be listing each preset as an "FX" or something? I don't know.

Also some of those effects it seems like I already have with Movie Studio Platinum 16. "VFX: Damage", "Color: Starter", "VFX: Lighting" (not even on list for Suite), "VFX: Neon Lights" (don;t use it but those presets all sound exactly like ones I have already).

So does that mean the ones I already have in 16 Platinum quit working if I upgrade to 17 Platinum if they are not included in that version? They only keep working if I upgrade to 17 Suite? What if some of the ones I have and use now are not even included in 17 Suite? I just lose them? I have no idea until I upgrade to 17 Suite or Platinum to find out.

Also I have several custom presets on those effects I use all the time and I don't want to lose. Some of those are carried over from 14 Platinum, maybe even 13 Platinum. I know a lot have stopped working along the way when upgrading.

I don't think downloading a separate demo will answer any of those questions about the upgrade. I don't know why they make it so difficult to figure out what happens with all the plug-ins when you upgrade.

https://fxhome.com/store/hitfilm-express#vfx-starter may give you an idea of the effects included in the "Pack".

And I guess you can find out which come over to v.17 only if you install the trial. It's highly recommended always anyway [pinned post on the forum]. Your choice of course.

Yes I saw that, that's when I realized some of those that I already have are in different packages not included in either update (possibly).

Also I don't know what happens to legacy FX you already had when you upgrade. If install the demo that is not going on top of current 16 Platinum install like an upgrade would, that would be a separate installation, so that wouldn't necessarily tell me what would happen to my previously installed FX that are not included in the update version.

This is way to complicated. They should just let you keep the FX you already have when upgrading instead of constantly changing the packages. Maybe they do.. I don't know. I guess that is part of the many questions I have.

When I upgraded before I don't think the FX packages changed all that much so it wasn't an issue. Now from 16 to 17 seems I might lose some things I do not want to lose. I'd like to know before I go willy nilly installing updates over top of my current program just to "see what happens".

Installing the trial of v.17 does not affect your existing v.16. It's a separate installation, not an update.

Right.. That's what I thought and said in post above.

So installing 17 demo won't tell me if my current FX in 16 Platinum that is not part of 17 platinum or suite will be deleted or what when I go to install upgrade.

Previous versions are not overwritten by a new version. You can have several versions installed simultaneously. E.g. I currently have MSPs 10 to 17 and VPros 11 to 17 installed. Many of the 3rd-party plugins may be version-specific.

BWX232 wrote on 5/27/2020, 12:11 PM

Ok.. So yeah I have Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 13 through 16 now.. with all the FX packs they came with.. So hopefully if I upgrade to 17 Platinum I will be able to keep all those old FX packs, etc..

Makes it hard to do a fresh installation though. I'd like to but I have so many presets fro different things it would be a nightmare to try to recreate all that.

Hmmm.. I'd be doing an upgrade, not a fresh install if I bought 17 Platinum or Suite.. I thought you were talking about that not a separate install. I realize you can have separate installs but when upgrading it seems as though new is overwriting the old one, but I'm not sure how the licensing works with those FX packs when doing that. It is as clear as mud to me now.

Not so, your upgrade will be a separate install. You will have both 16 and 17 working on your system. 17 does not override 16. The "upgrade" refers to just pricing as you are already a VMS user. Both a new purchase or "upgrade" are identical programmes.

Rather than chase your tail around in circles it's best to do as vkmast has recommended and download the trial and find out for yourself which FX from previous versions will work for you.

I see where they install to a different location, but they must use the same library of files because all my presets and everything carry over as if it was installed on top of old program. I can't member exactly where those files are without looking, in the app data folder or user data folder somewhere I guess.

It's not installed on top of an old program. Your presets, customised render templates etc are stored in various locations and your VMS17 installation will go looking for them so they are made available in VMS17. Likewise it will go looking for OFX on your system which it's able to use, and present them to you in the VMS17 Video FX window.

I realize they are not physically overwriting the program data, etc. I was referring to how it dealt with the OFX, licenses, etc.. Like you say it uses the various locations the info and incenses are in. I made custom locations for their installation, I know where they are.

I do seem to remember accidentally trying to run an old version of Movie Studio Platinum once (old shortcut mistaken for new one) and getting an error saying the license is not valid anymore because I upgraded or something like that though.

Anyways I wonder if a demo will also go looking for all those OFX locations exactly like an upgrade would. I guess I will just install the demo and see what happens. Regardless of what happens I think Magix should spell it all out for it's customers exactly what will happen before you upgrade.
