does anyone have screen capture working?

Mindmatter wrote on 6/13/2021, 10:19 AM

Hi all

screen capture doesn't work here, neither in v17 or V8. Sometimes it'll show a screeshot of one, sometimes the 2 screens, sometimes none at all, and the screenshots are static and don't refelect any movement on either screen. It also doesn't record anything, no matter what setting.
Is there any solution?

Thanks!

Depends on your hardware. In my case I have to use it as a standolone feeded through my iGPU.
I use it for all my screenvideo's here.

@Mindmatter It was truly atrocious at the start. I believe it’s one of those, “We have a screen capture module” check box checked, next.

It won't work with my AMD RX 480 8 gig, but it will work the onboard (I have two screens, one on the RX480 and one on the mother board (1080P). The AMD utility is much better if you have an AMD card.

Is there any solution?

Yes, it's called OBS studio. It's free, has many more recording options including lossless encoding, and the recordings edit well in Vegas.

+1 For OBS Studio. It doesn't care what hardware you have, it just works.

If you have an Intel CPU/GPU, the Graphics Command Center has capture abilities, too.

Howard-Vigorita wrote on 6/14/2021, 9:16 AM

AMD has it built into their drivers... they call it ReLive. Nvidia also has a driver based capture but you need to download the free ShadowPlay app from their web site. The one that's best to use is the one that your display is plugged into... which for typical Intel-cpu laptops is usually the Intel igpu.

wwaag wrote on 6/14/2021, 11:57 AM

A word of caution. I would avoid using GPU apps such as Relive and ShadowPlay since they record video with a variable frame rate which Vegas does NOT like. To verify, at least for Nvidia, I just did a desktop capture and here is the media info from the resulting file.

Note the large variation in FPS from 17 to 102. If you use such captures, you will most likely have to transcode to easily edit it in Vegas.

Perhaps there is a way to force these apps to record using a constant frame rate, but such an option was not readily apparent in the dialogs.

Oh, good point. The Intel looks like it's a constant 30fps but in reality it's not:

Vegas capture is working here, but I understand not everyone is having the same fortune. It seems to be downscaling most of the feeds I give it.

The history of Shadowplay and Bandicam with Vegas is well documented and not encouring -- OBS works well in Vegas with sensible settings.

jetdv wrote on 6/14/2021, 12:19 PM

I have it working but I had to run it direct from outside Vegas and force it to use the Intel video card. After that, it does work.

Personally, I'm using Vegas Stream for this purpose.

I get the impression that a lot of posts here are NOT going about the original question about Vegas Capture for which I gave a normal solution: Capture with Vegas Screen Capture from the menu " File", which gave me a file with this MediaInfo:

Just tested screen capture using the amd relive I've been using for years with Vegas and it's indeed VFR but the max and min rates are almost identical.

Never given me a problem in any version of Vegas. Intel Graphics Command Center shows a much wider range and a recent Windows update broke it on my laptop... also broke Vegas and OBS capture on same machine. Had to grab Intel's beta driver (30.0.100.9667) to get them working again.
