Editing PRORESS 422 files.

Salleke13 wrote on 9/5/2015, 2:58 AM
Hello everyone,

Can my MOVIE STUDIO PLATINIUM 13 software import and edit PRORES 422 files, generated by a NINJA 2 fieldrecorder?

I would like to buy such a fieldrecorder but before I do I would like to know if the files from the NINJA 2 recorder can be edited in MOVIE STUDIO PLATINIUM 13.

Thanks to all in advanced,

Salleke.

I'd very much recommend Vegas Pro if you're going to edit video that's in a professional format.

Movie Studio is really built for editing consumer formats like DV-AVI, MPEG and AVCHD.

Hello Steve,

Thank you for the replay.

I know that VEGAS PRO would do a fine job editing PRORESS 422 files.

But can MOVIE STUDIO PLATINIUM 13 import and edit those files even
if it would be slow or cumbersome?

I do very basic editing, nothing fancy.

Thank you.

I've had success importing some ProRes files in Movie Studio Platinum 13.
If the files you have contain a stereo audio track, they will likely work. The files that have not worked for me contain 8 audio channels.

Why don't you download a native prores example from the internet, install the latest QuickTime, and test it in MSP 13 trial?

Be sure and let us know how it turns out.

That's a very good idea and suggestion, I will do that and let you know how it wend.

Thank you all.

I'm running SMSP13 build 955 on an old duoCore Windows 7 desktop.

I add ProresHQ, Prores422, DNxHD220X, DNxHD220 from a Samurai Blade, so far without problems. As suggested above, update to the latest Quicktime.

and.....they all look great to me.

George,

Thank you for the response.

Like Musicvid10 suggested I have surched the internet to find a
sample PRORES 422 file somewhere. But I did'nt find any.

I did find one but it could not be read in my SMP 13.

My question to you is: could you please send me a little PRORES 422 file
made with you're Samurai Blade recorder. I think that the files from you're
recorder are the same that are created with the NINJA 2 from Atomos.

Thank you in advance for the help and greatings from Belgium.

Have you tried this website: http://www.cinemartin.com/cinec/samples/

I downloaded several sample files from here to test my SMSP13. If you try this scroll down the page and look for "Prores 422 Output".

I agree, the files from my Samurai Blade and your Ninja 2 should be the same. If I'm not mistaken the big difference between the units is HDMI -vs- SDI.

I would be more than happy to provide you with a sample clip. However, I have a couple issues. 1st, I don't have any short clips and currently my Samurai Blade is at Atomos under repair for a bad analog audio input. I should have it back by this coming Tuesday/Wednesday, and could then record a short 5 second sample.

2nd, I'm on a 12 gig per month data plan and have just enough to make it until October 13th, when I get the new month allotment!! A small Prores422 file will be about half a gig. If you can wait until then, I will me happy to post it. File on a disc by snail mail probably wouldn't be any quicker.

Best Regards.....George (...and greetings from the USA)

I can tell you that I often open very high bit rate ProRes files in MS13 on a "medium" machine (6 cores and 16 gig's, middle of the road GPU) and editing is fine. However you cannot output ProRes from MS13.
Eagle Six wrote on 9/26/2015, 5:57 PM
No problem Salleke,

I would definitely like to hear back on your progress, and don't hesitate to ask, if you need a test file from my Samurai.

BTW: The Prores 422 sample files from that website loaded and processed fine in my ver 13 SMSP, so if you have a problem with them, maybe you/we should look for something else in your desktop system process.

Salleke,

I have a couple other thoughts that may be of use.

If you are not aware, you may want to visit the Vegas forum at Creative Cow (https://forums.creativecow.net/sonyvegas). A couple searches there have always been enlightening to me.

Also, John Rafrano contributes to the Creative Cow Vegas forum, and appears to be one of the premier experts on everything Vegas as well as Movie Studio. Here is one of his post about creating a template for DNxHD to a MOV container. That may not be of immediate use to you, depending on how you render and for what purpose, but he also has other interesting articles.

Also, if you are not familiar, Derek Moran runs Movie Studio Zen (from Australia), and is very good with a lot of video tutorials and a forum on SMS, Vegas, DVD Architect, etc. https://www.moviestudiozen.com/

Of course if you are aware of these sites, it's old news, but if not, it may be helpful, they have been very helpful to me in the past.

Best Regards.......George

FYI, in addition to being the main man on the CCow Vegas forums, John Rofrano a.k.a. JohnnyRoy is often seen helping on these SCS forums, 130 posts in the last 6 months.
