See Edit menu > Editing Tool > Normal / Envelope / Selection / Zoom / Fade. You'll find keyboard shortcuts there as well.
No option to Customize Toolbar(s) in MSP 13 any more.

Select = Click or Click-and-Drag.
Zoom = Magnifier buttons on the bottom timeline borders.

If you had even looked at the interactive tutorial on the toolbar, you would know this.

I know what they do, but it is a pity you cannot show the tools on the button bar

That was one of the changes in MSP 13 indeed. But as mv10 reminds us, you can still see the Zoom tool button. The Selection Edit tool is hidden in the menu though and you need to go there or use the Next/Previous tool KB shortcuts.

Clicking the slide with the normal edit tool will select the slide. Using the up and down arrow keys on the keyboard make it zoom in and out. You can also use the scroll wheel on the mouse.

ahh the mysteries of Vegas 13!  I got confused too  so I did a how-to video as well on where these essential controls got hidden:
