Equalize Histogram setting in White Balance FX

MikeLV wrote on 8/17/2024, 1:16 PM

There's a setting in the White Balance FX called "Equalize Histogram" I'm not sure what it does, but it made the picture look better so I turned it on. Then at the end of my video, I have a 10 second fade to black. I notice the fade out wasn't working properly and narrowed it down to that setting in the White Balance. Is that expected behavior? There's nothing in the documentation that I can find on that setting. Thank you.

We need more info on what exactly "not working properly" means in order to be able to answer that.

I 2nd this, add this effect to any video clip and the transitions freak out. Trying it on a wedding now and all my transonstions on the footage i used this checkbox on have max brightness during the transition then once the transition ends it cuts the video abruptly. It's like a transparency effect instead of the crossfade transition.

Why would you want the histogram to be equalized? Turn on your scopes and you can see what it does.

I don't know what its purpose it, but for me, when I turned it on, it made the picture look better, until I discovered what it did to fades.

3POINT wrote on 1/28/2025, 1:32 PM

@MikeLV and @Levi-GB I can confirm the issue, but only when two tracks are used for the transition. A transition on one track is okay.

or

Another option is to use Auto color levels instead of White balance equalize histogram option. The result seems the same to me, but without the issue:

I tried playing with the color wheels but I just wanted to warm up the scene, white balance might could help me with that instead of playing with wheels. then I see this checkbox makes my footage "look nice" and it does seems to make the waveform "look nice" and even too. I'm sure no pro uses this button at all and thinks it would be pointless, but if one box can make it look nice, imma check the box lol. @3POINT seems to have found the "correct" place to enable this feature and a solution to put the vids on the same track, I'll give that a shot.. and learn color correction at some point too.. not that I have a fully color accurate monitor to try it out on anyway.

3POINT wrote on 1/28/2025, 3:05 PM

@Levi-GB I have a script from our Script-Guru @jetdv (who wrote that script especially on my request) which applies the Auto color level to ALL selected events on the timeline with just one mouseclick. I use it almost daily and is a real timesaver instead of manually color correcting.

Another useful free Autolevel FX, which does the same but on frame by frame-basis, is https://www.semw-software.com/en/autolevels/ (also written on my request).

Levi-GB wrote on 1/28/2025, 3:57 PM

@3POINT I'll definitely check it out, thanks

@3POINT

Which option do you think is better, Auto color level or Auto Levels? And what is the main difference between the two?

MikeLV wrote on 1/28/2025, 4:41 PM

I haven't messed with the color grading panel much as I notice it seems to feel clunky and slow. I think when you apply effects using it, the encodes are slower too. @J-Toresen that's a good question. I downloaded the AutoLevel FX, thanks for sharing that with us; I will give it a try.

3POINT wrote on 1/28/2025, 4:41 PM

@J-Toresen the result of both is quite equal. The main difference ist that Auto color level takes a sample of a frame in the middle of an event and levels the whole event accordingly that sample. Autolevels from Semw samples every frame in an event and levels accordingly. This can result in color shifts in events with panning or moving objects.

J-Toresen wrote on 1/28/2025, 5:34 PM

Thank you @3POINT

I've used Autolevels from Semw, and will take at look at Auto color.

Jøran

3POINT wrote on 1/29/2025, 1:00 AM

@J-Toresen Another difference is the way of use. Semw Autolevels can be used as Event, Media, Track or as Project Fx, while Vegas Auto color fx only can be used as Event Fx. That's why I asked @jetdv to write a script to apply this Fx to multiple selected events at once.

An example to show difference between SeMW Autolevel and Vegas Auto Color Level, watch the difference especially when the cars drive by:

Yes I did, but I'm not sure if I may distribute it. @jetdv wrote it on my request. If Edward (@jetdv) has no objections, I will publish it here.

Thanks for the additional information, and the example illustrates the problem with SeMW Autolevel. By the way, who is this person that developed Graide Color Match and Graide Color Curves?

Jøran Toresen

That's a german engineer, Michael Wörner who I knew from the former German Vegas Forum (doesn't exist anymore). I contacted him about 10 years ago with the request to make the autolevel fx (originally designed by https://www.mikecrash.com/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=13) working again in Magix Vegas. He did and afterwards he also developed Graide and some Extensions. I never met him personally.

Thanks @vkmast and @3POINT . A side note about Germany: My better half and I have visited Germany several times. Mostly the Baltic coast and Rügen. Fantastic for those of us who like cycling (radfahren) - and beer. One visit to Thuringia (Weimar and Erfurt). My next wish is Münster and the surrounding area. And last but not least: the Moselle valley and the "Romatiche Rhein". I live in Oslo, Norway. Sorry this is off topic.

That's not far away from where I live in Germany, I also plan a Moselle Valley tour with my camper later this year. But first I will start touring through Spain the week after next week.

Jøran Toresen

No experience, color correction goes beyond my knowledge, therfore I use tools like SeMW autolevels which corrects 95% of my footage. The rest I correct with Vegas autolevels.

For Graide, there is a free trial to find out yourself.
