Fast computer but movie studio 11 is lagging

When doing very simple edits it works fine but when using pan/crop, moving texts fading in and out it really laggs in the preview window making it difficult to time the editing well.

I have a fast enough computer though so I don't se why theese rather standard type of editing makes it lagg when my computer is so much faster than recomended specs.

I have movie studio 11
requirements
win 7
2ghz processor, multicore recomended for hd
400 mb hard drive space
1gb ram (2gb recomended)

I have
win 7
amd fx8320 8 core overclocked to 4ghz
120 gb ssd + 1tb storage disk
8gb ddr3 ram 1600 mhz
gpu ATI Radeon HD 4800 series

the only thing that isn't pretty new and fast is the gpu but sony doesn't even mention gpu requirements for movie studio 11 and it never tops out.

Also when I check open hardware monitor for what might bottleneck, nothing does, nothing is even above 30-40%, neither cpu, memmory, gpu, but still it is lagging.

Anyone know why and or what I can do about it?

What preview window settings and what type of video are you editing?

Post the text view results from MediaInfo (free download) of the the video you're editing.

The fps can go down quite a bit when effects are added but if you play that section several time, it gets buffered and will play at full fps.

Here are some tips, Eugenia, a forum member posted:

I try using preview half and have unchecked scale to fit preview window and I am editing .mov and .3gp and .mts and it doesn't seem to matter, I can start a new project with say internet 720p 30fps settings and just ad colors and text and then use pan/crop effects and transitions between colors and text and it lags without any video present, the video is less laggy than thoose type of things are.

I notice it buffering and plays a little bit better when re playing a section but still not smoothly and it should play smoothly when the computer isn't topping out or the software is bad and shouldn't be charged for.

And still I don't understand how it can lag when my computer isn't even close to topping out in performance, it just doesn't make sense to me, it's like movie studio isn't made to be able to run smoothly then if a fast enough computer can't make it run smoothly, I think that if you have a fast enough computer you should be able to run a software with it's best settings and run smoothly.

I have a fast computer and can't even make it run smoothly on preview half settings with the software's own media generators even though me computer is not running above 40% ever during the editing process.

Performance really depends on the type of movie file and the codec used. There was a definite increase of performance from movie studio 11 to movie studio version 12. If I were you, I would invest in the update. Try downloading vs 13 (trial) and see if there is any improvement first.

+1 for Ivan's suggestion. Versions 12 and 13 added 64-bit support and do try the http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/moviestudiope/compare13 Platinum version[/link], not the basic Studio.
V 13 also allows (in Project media window) creating proxy files for high-definition editing. It might "please anyone who experiences lag in the Preview Window on a regular basis", as one reviewer put it and I agree.

Thanks guys, tried the studio 13 platinum 64 bit demo and it seems really smooth.

What I still find odd though is that studio 11 didn't even top out over 40% on one single core and still didn't run smooth.. but now as studio 13 works I won't waste time figuring that out.

Well, I don't see how updating will help. Did not help me... Running a ASRock Extreme 4 z77 Intel chip set, Ivy Bridge 3570k Standard clock, and sometimes OC'd to 4.5 GHz, GTX 760 SC 4GB GDDR5, Plextor Extreme series 256 GB SSD, and a 1 TB segate HDD, And have a waterblock cooling saolution for my CPU, never breaks 60 C. And my case has 4- 120 MM fans..... 720 WATT power supply GOLD. What else could ya ask for... Yet MS13 x64 still lags like a mother. Even with render proxy'd.
DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY MAN. Wish i would have bought a different product. Cause there hasnt even been an update to Sony's "Movie Studio 13" since i bought the suka. Just headaches. And prior to switching to Windows 7 S Movie Studio crashed 24/]7 on Windows 8-8.1
BUYER BEWARE. I have a thread on that here
