💡(Feature Request) Always-on alpha files

In the videos that I edit for youtubers, I need to put several assets such as: like button, subscribe, social networks, etc. These are all alpha animations, and it's really annoying having to keep changing everyone's properties.

I thought the way to change this was to right-click the video event, choose Properties, go to the Media tab, change to the desired Alpha option, and then click on the disk to "save" this as the default...

Yes Ed, for QT32 formats, I would expect to have to do this also. The qt7plug.dll is not being actively developed. 🙂

That is a cute splash screen from the OP.

I thought by clicking on the "save" button that it SAVED that setting for all future uses of that type of file on your system so that you no longer needed to go into the properties to change it...

oh, here this save option is not enabled

The subject here is about not having to do that every time I insert a new video in alpha in the project.

@m3lquixd - I agree. VP should/would benefit from auto ALPHA recognition, it's what you've seen before now. Odd it doesn't any more.

john_dennis wrote on 1/12/2023, 11:06 PM

At twice the size of Quicktime Animation, I think I'd render my reusable graphics to a PNG Image Sequence and forget the whole matter.

@john_dennis - As always, you speak much pragmatic sense. And yes.

Creating a separate folder with hundreds/thousands png images and reimporting those as image sequence into Vegas again isn't that as much effort as just creating a video with alpha and reimport that video and tell Vegas that it has Alpha?

I support @m3lquixd request that Vegas should automatically recognize alpha.

Grazie wrote on 1/13/2023, 12:17 AM

@3POINT - Yes, a far better solution, and should be part of the VP Toolkit. Pragmatism doesn’t necessarily mean functional nor wished for. Auto recognition should be a straightforward improvement. We want to be left to do the creative thing and not needing to putzing about with workarounds. But hey, what do I know?

3POINT wrote on 1/13/2023, 12:33 AM

I just remembered another option.

Instead of rendering a video with alpha or creating a folder and rendering a png image sequence. Just save your "alpha" project as veg and reimport that veg as nested veg. Alpha is automatically recognized and no need for huge alpha video files or folders with thousands of images, just a simple veg file.

@3POINT - Woah! Stunning suggestion! Now, if you need to edit that ALPHA Veg, Right Click and Edit Nested Veg.

Grazie wrote on 1/13/2023, 1:19 AM

Yeah, I used to do this with "Spinning Logos" and import them as Nested Veggies into Branded Docos.

Already suggested and refused... That is what I actually do all the time.

@jetdv

I looked at the missing Stream Properties Save button back to Vegas Pro 13 and found that it became disabled in Vegas Pro 19 at least by build 648.

@john_dennis sorry, I missed your proposal.

After re-reading whole thread, I can imagine that @m3lquixd prefers a video with alpha instead of a nested veg. His overlay is quite complex and I can imagine that rendering each time as nested veg takes some time instead of an overlay once rendered as video with alpha.

As long as Vegas isn't able to detect alpha in all codecs that are able to contain alpha channel, all alternatives and workarounds have been mentioned here.

Grazie wrote on 1/13/2023, 5:53 AM

And, with all the intelligent VegHeads hereabouts, it comes back to this.

Dexcon wrote on 1/13/2023, 6:11 AM

Over the years with the alpha media that I've used, sometimes alpha works natively without any problems (excellent), but sometimes an Alpha Channel option needs to be selected in Properties/Media (bother). Really, it's no big deal - just a minor inconvenience in the scheme of things. I would much prefer that the Vegas team focus on improvements in stability, timeline performance and so on.

Truth. But there's also the issue of sharing these alpha animations to other people. I will not share the project.

While not "automatic", here are a couple of tools that may help. There's a free tool "Set Alpha" in the HOS Free Tools Library that enables the user to set alpha for selected events.

If you have Vegasaur (paid app), you can use the Quick Properties dialog to set alpha for either selected media or selected events.
