Generated text not displaying

Issambard wrote on 4/29/2015, 11:40 AM
Vegas pro 13
64bit build 444
Looked around can't find any solutions.
Basically I add generated text. Don't doesn't matter color doesn't matter (defaults to verdana, white and 48pt). The preview window only displays a grey box (the box is resizable and correlates to the scale option of the generated media)
The clip is stretched out and the cursor is definitely in the clip. In the project media folder window I see the clip with the white text.
I found this while working on a project with video, but I have tried this on a new blank Vegas project with no clips other than the generated text.
I can open old projects with generated text and they show up as they should, but I create new generated text in that project and nothing shows up, but the grey box.

This is a laptop and the application is set to use my gpu 675m. I don't recall this ever being a problem before, and since it seems to work with old projects this seems to be an issue with Vegas not the video driver.

Anyone have any ideas?

Be sure you don't have an animation activated that starts the text off screen or faded out.
larry-peter wrote on 4/29/2015, 12:40 PM
Which text/character generator are you using? One of Sony's or NewBlue?
Issambard wrote on 4/29/2015, 12:53 PM
Built in text generator.

There's no animation.

I checked that the clip is looped so it drags out correctly.
I can clearly see where text should be by the grayish box, but it never appears.

I haven't checked this on another machine yet though. I planned to do that next. Since this isn't reported by anyone else I don't think this is a common but but possibly specific to this computer and it's configuration.

Edit: I just tried adding generated media and picked a white solid. It also doesn't display. I just get the default black. Also applying generated efx like hitfilm clouds doesn't do anything (a video clip right below it is all that is seen).

Also I had been using a custom project properties but I switched it back to 8bit and the hd 1080 24p project.

What's your setting in Split Screen View (and is that button selected)?
Issambard wrote on 4/29/2015, 1:40 PM
I am not using split screen.
Where would I check these settings?
vkmast wrote on 4/29/2015, 1:44 PM
One of the buttons above the Preview screen, to the left of Preview Quality setting.

This is a common problem reported in a number of threads. E.g. http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?Forum=4&MessageID=921660 You can search for others.

One possible solution is to simply use Legacy Text. Another (hopefully I'm getting this correct from memory. I read it a few weeks ago on the CC forum.) is to open Word, enter some text with your font and if it displays correctly, simply copy. Back in Vegas, paste it into your open Sony Text and Titles window. It should display correctly, Then make a preset. Then use that preset in the future.

I did so,e searching with just the words generated text before postingand didn't find anything related. What search terms do you recommend?

I tried legacy text and got the same behavior. I opened up word pad typed some text and pasted that in to the edit text window and still nothing (also checking for the color was still white and it was )

I have set it to Ariel and other fonts, and is made no difference.

I'm looking through the other thread now.

Try copying a working title clip from another project into yours and see if that can be modified. And this may seem obvious, but check that your compositing mode is set to Source Alpha on the track that you're adding text generators to.

From what I recall, the problem for others seems to be fonts that are often proprietary. But if you can't display a basic font like Arial in Text and Titles or Legacy Text, then something else is awry. How about for a new project? Do these fonts display properly in others applications? If so, I would first save all your presets and then do a clean restart of Vegas (I believe its holding the Shift key down while starting Vegas. This sets everything back to default settings.) If that didn't work, then I'd do a re-install of Vegas. Perhaps someone else might have some ideas.

I might not have been clear but yes I tried this. I can open up old projects with generated text and they are fine and I can copy those from that project and paste them in a new project and see them. I might try making those a preset.

Edit: copied a generated text clip from another open project(Copy paste, not importing the saved clip)

Text shows up. I save that as a preset. Create new generated text, and select that preset. Nothing. No text, just the grey box that is the size of the text.

This issue appears to be with any clip created with generated media option, even ones that don't involve text.

I have tried changing the alpha mode as well and this does nothing, though I can see the effect in the media browser.

RESOLVED: I did several things but I think I know what happened.
I unsinstalled Vegas and reinstalled it (didn't bother deleting folders or registry entries yet). Updated the you drivers. I doubt either of those had any effect.

What appears to have been the issue is that the duration option at the top of the generated text window was all 0s. The event was zero length when it is first created, so even toggling the match event length button did nothing at first(I never noticed this option before).
I changed the duration to something like 00:00:20.22 and the text appears now.
It's interesting that dragging the clip to expand this didn't change the duration.

Addendum: it appears that the reinstall or driver update might have helped because now when I create a new generated clip, the media doesn't appear, but when I drag it to expand it it does appear, even though duration shows all 0s still.

I just created an acc to tell you this. I had the same problem but i figured it out. Your text track might be muted or the main track is set as "solo" Look for excamation marks to the right on the track where you have a bunch of options . Once you disabled that, also make sure you right click and go on insert/Remove envelope and make sure "mute" isnt checked

Just made account to say thank you beboid you made me experiment with solo button on tracks. Even nothing was set to solo, clicking solo on main track than clicking again nothing changed, but clicking solo on track where is generated media made this track solo and text show up, clicking solo again everything comes back main video and rest but text track is still there, so problem solved.

Check my my YouTube , everything is done with Vegas.

Your text event needs to be on the upper/top track.

Good of you to use the forum "Find" search and find your solution. As VPro online Help (F1) (Search: text) puts it: "To display text over a video event, place the generated media event on a track above the video."

Thanks so much. I've struggled with this soo much

If you are copying and pasting white text it will not show. Needs to be pasted to a Word doc, font changed to black, then copy and paste.
