Glitches in mov files

bluesguitarjimi wrote on 8/14/2022, 3:33 AM

Hi, I have been using Vegas for over a decade, since it was owned by Sony, and have just upgraded to Vegas Pro 20.

I was using Vegas 16, and on 16 there was never any problem using mov files filmed on my iphone. Now all of a sudden however, glitched squares have started appearing when I import any video from my iphone into Vegas. The files themselves play perfectly well outside of vegas, but as soon as they are imported into vegas the glitches appear. They appear on the preview, they appear with no track FX added, and they appear on the final rendered video. Nothing I do seems to fix this issue. I need to be able to render these videos for my job!

Any help appreciated.

A screengrab might help to recognise the issue.

@bluesguitarjimi - Hello, please supply MediaInfo data using the free MediaInfo app.

bluesguitarjimi wrote on 8/14/2022, 5:07 AM

No worries. This is the media info data for one of the video files that has the problem.

diverG wrote on 8/14/2022, 5:35 AM

@bluesguitarjimi And the rest of the Mediainfo data please. If from 'phone is frame rate constant as shown further down in media info. If so maybe convert to constant fps.

I'm honestly right on the edge of cancelling this thing, getting a refund and switching to another video editor. No Magix customer support chat, no phone number, a 2 day wait for a response from technical support... just utterly hopeless. This is my job, and I have a deadline to meet. And I'm just sat here twiddling my thumbs, hoping some kind person out there knows how to fix this idiotic problem that shouldn't be happening in the first place.

I hate Adobe Premiere, I really do, but I may go back to them simply because you can talk to customer support.

If I can't get this fixed by the end of the day I am ending my association with Magix and taking my business elsewhere

You do realize today is Sunday and nobody will be working until tomorrow???

Go to the Options - Preferences - File I/O tab. Try unchecking the "legacy HEVC Decoding" box and see if that makes a difference.

@bluesguitarjimi - Ouch! I hear you're PO-ed! I get it. Try this also. Apart from @jetdv fine suggestion, try this, open your Project Settings and Match your Settings to the Media.

We're trying here 😉

Thanks for your help guys.

Jetdv - Re customer support not working Sundays - I was using Adobe for a short while, and on my plan with them previously I had 24/7 chat or phone support... So have probably got used to that. Having email as the only option for tech support from MAGIX and a 2 day minimum wait for a response means that when something inexplicably goes wrong (as it has for me) with a looming deadline (as I have) and no way to talk to a human being in MAGIX tech support, it's just panic stations - or switch to a different provider! Thankfully you guys in the vegas community are very much saving their bacon here.

Grazie - I do appreciate the support - and I hope MAGIX appreciates you guys too.

Right, I've tried unchecking the legacy HEVC Decoding box, done a short test render of a tiny snippet, and it looked promising. So I'm going to render the whole thing now with that box unchecked, and once it's done I'll report back

Thanks again

Glory be. It worked!

Thanks Jetdv - here's the solution for anyone else who needs it:

"Go to the Options - Preferences - File I/O tab. Uncheck the "legacy HEVC Decoding" box"

Your media has a variable frame rate. (typical 'phone files). Most NLE's VP included do not work well with a variable frame rate. Convert it to a fixed standard rate 24,25,30,50,or 60. Handbrake (free) will do this for you.

Frame rate mode                          : Variable
Frame rate                               : 47.590 FPS
Minimum frame rate                       : 28.571 FPS
Maximum frame rate                       : 66.667 FPS
