Help with Sony VMS 11 & DVDAS 5.0/186 please

rondi wrote on 1/24/2017, 6:40 PM

The problem I have is--the MP4 original file plays very smoothly, but the BR, after the below conversion, editing, rendering, burning has lots of stutter/judder particularly on vertical objects--like tree trunks and cliff walls.

My captured original file is:

Bit rate                        : 10.0 Mbps
Width                           : 1 920 pixels
Height                          : 1 080 pixels
Display aspect ratio      : 16:9
Frame rate mode          : Constant
Frame rate                    : 29.970 fps

I then use Handbrake to change the Format profile : Baseline@L4 to Main Level 4.2, and Constant Frame Rate to 24 fps. and an Average Bit Rate of 20mbs. My SVMS will not display the original file without pixelations--it needs to be converted to a higher Profile--then there are no pixelations.

After Handbrake, I edit the file using SVMS, rendering it as a MainConcept Mpeg2 (m2v) BR 24 fps, 1920x1080 Progressive, YUV, 20 Mbps.

I then add this to a DVDAS menu and burn to a BD-RE.

Part of the problem is DVDAS is limited to a Frame Rate of 24p. My BD player and projector can display 60P but I can't burn a BD at that Frame Rate with DVDA 5.0.

Any suggestions are appreciated, Ron

I need some pointers.

Bluray does not support 1080p at 29.97. This is not a limitation of DVDA, it is a limitation of Bluray. Is the original file in progressive?

Thanks for the reply David. The original captured file is Progressive---so 29.97P. I should have copied that from MediaInfo.

The original file is not captured from a BD.

Not to be argumentative but the HD (BD) spec on Wikipedia is:

1920×1080 59.94i     16:9
1920×1080 50i [a]     16:9
1920×1080 24p     16:9
1920×1080 23.976p     16:9 so yes--60p is not in the spec--but 60i is, but my DVDA 5.0 does not have that as an option--24p is the highest at 1920x1080.

After looking at the above specs--I am going to try the 1280 x 720 and see if DVDAS really will produce a BD with 59.97P (which it lists in the Properties dropdown box) and what it looks like.

I'll report back.

You aren't being argumentative when you agree. :). I don't have DVDA 5.0, I have 5.2 and there is definitely a template for 1080i at 29.97 (59.94i), since that is a Bluray standard. Can you do a screen capture of the template options and post it?

In case you don't know, 59.94 interlaced is the same as 29.97fps. 59.94 is the number of fields when used in an interlaced file.

daveT, here. Note though that the OP has DVD A Studio 5.0 build 186.

Thanks vkmast. So you do have settings for 29.97 in DVDA when interlaced.

I have 29.97 I, not P. The only Progressive I have in the properties is 24 & 23.976.

Last night I used Handbrake to convert a small sample from 1080p 29.97 to 720p 60. I used VMS to edit and Render to 1280x720 60p. Then I used DVDAS to Prepare 1280x720x60P and that is what was burned on the BD (confirmed by MediaInfo). The video looked the same as the original--no judder.

I can capture in either 720 60p or 1080 29.97P. So from now on, I'll capture in 720p and just use Handbrake to improve the profile so I can edit in VMS. Hopfully VMS 14 Plat, and the associated DVDAS will burn in 60p. Then I can go back to capturing in 1080 30p.

Thanks for the help--I appreciate it. Ron

Like I said, 1920 x 1080 progressive at 29.97 is NOT a Bluray standard. (1080p)

rondi wrote on 1/25/2017, 3:57 PM

David--Yes I understand 30p is NOT a BD standard--and I'm just saying--I can only capture at 720 60P or 1080 29.97P. So when I use 1080--DVDAS ONLY lets me use 24 (or 23.976) Progressive. I think most of the judder comes from converting the 29.97p to 24p, therefore if I use 720 60p--there is no frame rate conversion and the movement of filming the cliff side from the helicopter is very smooth, like the original---and not like 1080 24P.

You could also convert the 29.97 p to interlaced. Honestly, I don't think you will see any quality difference that wouldn't be there already from the conversion.

rondi, what software are you using to capture?

I've been traveling--late to the party again :) I don't see any way to PM you and I don't want to get in trouble by posting info that is not pertinent to Magix products., so please email me at ronsbike2 at gmail.com
