How do I delete time?

David-Putman wrote on 4/30/2021, 7:05 AM

I am using Movie Studio Platinum 18. I can find an option to insert time, but I cannot find an option to delete a block of time. I am producing my third five minute video of soccer plays by my granddaughter. Each video contains snippets from 5-12 seconds in length. I currently have 42 snippets in the current video I am working on. I deleted one snippet in the middle leaving a blank spot in the video. I can manually move the 20+ videos after this point, but it would seem there would be an option to delete that blank block of time. As I make these videos I am constantly moving segments around which frequently cause this problem of blank blocks of time.

In VEGAS Movie Studio 17 Platinum you can "close gaps". From Online Help:

"Closing gaps

You can quickly close the gaps between selected events.

Select two or more events on a track.

Choose Menu Edit or right-click on an empty space in the track or on one of the selected events and choose Close gaps from the menu or context menu.

The second and all following selected events are moved towards the first one so they will border at each order closing the gaps between them.

If no event is selected when performing this command all gaps on the track will be closed."

Your mention of v.18 may be a typing error as no such version has been announced as yet.

Try enabling 'Auto Ripple', one of the selections below the timeline. Auto Ripple means that if you delete an video/audio event on the timeline, all the following events move up to close the gap. Likewise, if you move an event up the timeline, all that event's following events also move up as well. There are some pitfalls with Auto Ripple so its often a case - for me anyway - of turning it on only when needed.

Auto Ripple does not seem to do anything with the gaps

David-Putman wrote on 4/30/2021, 7:45 AM

Close Gaps worked great, but it closed all gaps. I had a few spots where I was leaving a blank to insert snippets from future games this spring; it closed these gaps too. However, I can be patient and close all gaps at the end of the season.

And yes, I am using V17 not V18

Did you have Auto Ripple enabled when you deleted the event on the timeline? Auto Ripple only works when deletion/insertion/etc is done while Auto Ripple is activated.

Also Auto Ripple will not close up any gaps on the timeline after the point on the timeline where the Auto Ripple action has been employed. With Auto Ripple, if you delete an event, Auto Ripple just pulls up all the ensuing events - as is - to butt up against the end of the event just prior to the event that has just been deleted.
