How do I get square 1024x768 I've tried rendering in every format

Ryan-Crawford wrote on 12/16/2018, 11:56 AM

I've just spent over 100 hours making a video in movie studio 15 and I cannot get rid of the black bars on either side. I've read a million guides and tried rendering in every format in the program all to no avail.

I'm using 12 year old clips that are 1024x768. There were no black bars in the preview and if worst came to worst thought I would be able to just stretch the video to 1440x1080; I cannot. Every format with 1440x1080 has a 1.3333 pixel ratio for some reason. Everything is widescreen except only the most terrible quality mpeg.

What are my options? Is there another program like Pro that will have the formats that I am looking for? Will this program be able to read my .vf file?

Please help.

Why not render to the same properties as your source media in regards of frame size and pixel aspect ratio?

Movie studio 15, build 135, and it doesn't say platinum anywhere so I am guessing it's basic.

I am trying to... I don't know how to... I rendered in every single format available and I never saw a "match source option." Here are the options I have: https://i.imgur.com/JNgCz0s.png

You need to customise a render template to get your unusual image size BUT the basic version doesn't have customisable templates (according to the comparison here).

Thanks for the response. What version do I need to customize a template and will that version be able to read the .vf file as it is or will I have to start from scratch.

Platinum but before you rush to upgrade:

What format do you wish to export with and I'll check with my MS15 Plat that the template will allow it.

As for Platinum reading the vf file I assume so. But to be sure can you upload your vf file somewhere and I'll download and try. Don't worry that it won't contain the source material. The vf is small being just edit instructions etc.

I will take any high quality format that I can put on Youtube.

Let me know if this works, thanks!

Yes your file opens in VMS15. I made project properties 1024x768 and customised a Main Concept template to 1024x768. Rendered file plays "square" in WMP. I'll try other templates later.

No problems with Magix (Main Concept) and Sony AVC internet mp4 templates that I customised to 1024 x 768, which I now realise is 4:3.

BUT to my knowledge both YouTube and Vimeo stream videos in a 16:9 box. So although you've uploaded a 4:3 file it will be displayed on viewers screens with black bars each side (pillarboxing). You have no control over that and cannot avoid it. Hopefully someone might be able to prove me wrong?

@EricLNZ just to confirm, did you use the Platinum or basic version? You mentioned VMS 15 later on here.

(And I can't prove you wrong;) unless one has a 4:3 screen still?)

EricLNZ wrote on 12/17/2018, 5:12 AM

Sorry should have said Platinum. That's what we were suggesting Ryan upgrade to.

I've an old, but working, 4:3 CRT TV but no 4:3 pc screen.

Thanks for all the responses and testing!

YouTube has non-wide screen uploads:

Also, I found this article with details about it: https://www.theverge.com/2018/7/30/17629504/youtube-website-vertical-videos-without-black-bars
