How to add media to project but not timeline?

Fuse-Henry wrote on 6/6/2019, 4:27 PM

I am using Movie Studio 16.0 on a Windows 10 PC and I am a new user. Whenever I add new media to the project (a video source file) it automatically adds itself to the timeline. This is weird because when I mouse-over the "Add Media" button, it actually says "will not be added to the Timeline". Uh, no, it actually does. So if I add 5 video files, they all go straight to the Timeline and fill it up. This is inconvenient to my workflow and I then have to delete everything that was added. This is particularly inconvenient when I'm already in the middle of editing.

I want to be able to add media to the project and then add it (or an extraction from it) to the timeline manually AT MY OWN DISCRETION.

Is there a way to do this?

@Fuse-Henry - Hi there! This is the VegasPro Forum. You’d get better focused responses over at the MS Forum: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/vegas-movie-studio-forum/

It seems like you add the media to the storyboard bin of the Project Media window. Be sure not to use the storyboard bin. Either use the "All Media" bin or create a new bin (which must not be a subfolder of the storyboard bin) where you add the media.

Thanks, Marco but this doesn't seem to fit what I'm looking at. Maybe you're referring to Vegas Pro, but I'm on the cheaper one, Vegas Movie Studio. I don't see options of choosing or creating bins. It's a very, very simple layout with only one way to add media. I don't think this is the correct behavior of the interface. When I delete the newly added video from my timeline, it also disappears from the media panel above. Very weird.

I refer to Movie Studio Platinum 16. The basic version of Movie Studio actually misses this option.

Image 2: Added a video clip which immediately went to the Timeline. If deleted from Timeline, it's removed from the project!

This can't be the default behavior. It makes no sense and should be considered a bug.

Yes, you are right. If the software itself says media is not added to the timeline but it does and if it is not possible to delete media from the timeline without deleting it from Project Media, then there's something going wrong.

What options do you have on that dropdown box that says "Add media..."?

vkmast wrote on 6/6/2019, 6:40 PM

Note that you only have the Storyboard (bin) in Project media of the basic Movie Studio 16, not "All Media". If you cut an event from the Platinum timeline, that event is deleted from the Main Timeline bin there as well.

If you are still eligible for the refund, I suggest you try that and get the Platinum version instead. In any longer run, you'll need at least that anyway.

The options are:

1. Add Media
2. Import DVD Camcorder Disc
3. Capture Video
4. Extract Audio from CD

Vkmas: If that is the case, then why does the mouse-over hint read that adding media will not add it to the Timeline? That doesn't make any sense that it does anyway. I don't think I should have to upgrade to a more expensive version just to have normal timeline behavior.

I think you should use "power user mode"

vkmast wrote on 6/6/2019, 10:18 PM

In the Platinum version using "Add media" in Power user mode adds only to Project Media if you have selected All Media, not a Storyboard bin. In the basic version (as you said) you do not have "options of choosing or creating bins" and the "mouse-over hint" there seems to be a bug left over in cutting down features. This is probably "normal timeline behavior" there and one of the many restrictions of the cheaper version.

I reported this as an issue because it makes using the basic version even more complicated than using the Platinum or Pro version and because that mouse-over display makes no sense.

@Marco. exactly.

As I have only platinum, what "power user mode" does in the basic VMS ?

@FayFen see the same in English in the Images here.

Hi FayFen, Yes, I am actually using Power User Mode. That's what you're seeing in the screenshots, unless that's the bug in the software, that's it's not able to switch to the correct mode. There's two different interfaces to add media, but both methods add the media to the timeline.

@Marco. Thank you for reporting this! I'm quite sure this isn't the intended behavior, unless they are trying to annoy people into upgrading. I hope that is not the case.

Well, there are bunch of annoyances in the platinum version also...

This issue was recently discussed also here.

@Marco.  May I ask how you reported the issue? I would like to do the same.

You should use the given support web page. In this particular case the developers already read this forum topic and are aware of the reports here.
