i need the timeline to center at the cursor...

i don't know the name for this function, and can't seem to find it in the help file, but there seems to be 3 different types of movements for the cursor during playback. one is where the cursor moves and will go off the screen, but the timeline always stays put. in the second, the cursor goes to the edge of the screen, and then the timeline moves forward one full screen so as to keep the cursor on the screen. in the third, the cursor stays put in the center of the screen while the timeline moves. this one is my favorite, but i can't figure out how to get it set as my preference.

also, is there any sort of dual screen trim mode (like avid or fcp) that is available? if so, how do i set it? if not, what's the best way to do match cuts, and will this be in 5.0?

You can get close by holding SHIFT while going to Options | Preferences

Then choose Internal - scroll down to Smooth Scroll Timeline and set it to True. When the cursor gets near the edge, the time line will begin to scroll. Eventually the cursor will end up in the middle of the screen.

no prob - the Backslash key may also come in handy for you.

hmm sadly this needs to kick in a little sooner, but the back slash is helpful too.

Besides of 'back slash', the . (dot) / del at keypad is similar function... Keep pressing it and the pointer head will keep at the center of viewed timeline.

Back slash doesn't work for me on my usual keyboard layout (ENG US). I do my recentering by nudging the mousewheel backwards or forwards, which is actually a side effect of doing a timeline zoom. This leaves my left hand free for scratching my head and thumping my desk.

i like the "./del button thing. :)

Vegas has flexible window layout unlike AVID. You can create the layout you like. Hit ALT+2 to add the Trimmer window to your layout. Then View > Windows Layout > Save Layout As

Holding down ALT+CTRL and clicking on an edit point will give you a dual screen trim mode.

wahhhh! And I thought it was only me, ref the \ malarkey, mind you, head and desk thumping quite a common symptom of Backslash-itus.

Count me in re some of the keys incl. \ and I don't even use the EN (US) KB layout.

If you put your cursor on the edge of an event, as if to TRIM and hold ALT down, you will get a dual screen trim mode. (it may not show up until you actually move the cursor to trim)

Nick's way is exactly what I do too; including the head scratching 😉

In addition to DaveTu's suggestion you may want Expanded edit mode, which "takes the best of edge-trimming and A/B-roll editing to provide a fast, accurate method of trimming events?" Edit menu > Select > Expanded edit mode (Num 5).

the only way i've been able to get it to sorta do it is to press AND HOLD down the "period" or DOT/DEL key on the keypad. it's super annoying but it works.
