Layout

I have Movie Studio 15 Platinum and I am getting the Hang of how to Un Dock windows and things like this thanks to this Forum.

But I do not know if this is me not doing something Right or just Outside of the Program?

Right now the Top Left is my Media Pool and Top Right is the Display Screen and Bottom Center is the Timeline.

In Movie Studio 8. I put my Display Screen Bottom Left and the Media Pool Bottom Right and Timeline Top Center.

Now if I Un Dock Display Screen I can move it Bottom Left but it does not Snap in here. So I thought maybe it was because my Timeline was still here.

But I can not Move the Timeline.

Is this because the program just wont let you change the Layout the way you want?

But I can not Move the Timeline.

You can. Read Tip 1 from the screenshot below: "If you want to display the window docking area at the top of the Movie Studio Platinum window, select the Display timeline at bottom of main window check box on the Display tab of the Preferences dialog. Clear the check box to display the docking area at the bottom of the Movie Studio
Platinum window."

Note that there is more in this online Help article than the screenshot shows. We are just encouraging you to use Online Help (press F1) in your VMS 15 Platinum.

("To expand a docked window so it fills the docking area, click the Maximize button . Click the restore button to restore the window to its previous size" applies only to the current Vegas Pro.)

Edit: the Maximize/Restore button was removed from v.15 on.

Well I can Drag the Display Screen to the Left and Dock it and move the Project Media to the Right.

And I can not Un Dock the TimeLine and I did look for it in the Menus Option to Un Check it.

3 images of my Pro layout ( for Platinum and Vegas )

as you can imagine , this layout is really good for compositing Parent\Child tracks . I need that Vertical Stack

I would post a pic of the layout , if I could .

The layout is made of 5 floaters .

The Layout works on a 1080  res. TV\monitor

( Left )    ( Right )
( side )    ( side  )

Time Line | Viewer + Scopes
Time Line | Time Code Stamp
Time Line | Device Explorer
Time Line | main interface windows + Surround Panner + 5.1 Level Meters

( there is No vertical   gap )
( there is No horizontal gap )

the above is a rough look of how i do it ,
Any version of  Vegas Movie Studio Platinum and
any Vegas Pro can be setup that way .

the Left side Top to Bottom is the Time Line .
Full Height at  Half width .
Time Line is in it's own dock , by itself .
The entire time line thus is a floating window ,
positioned and sized , on the left side of the TV\monitor .

The Viewer sits in it's own dock ,
as a floating window , positioned and sized
at the Top Right  quadrant of the TV\monitor .
Sized to about 50% wide by 50% Tall .

Scopes window is docked on top
of the View window . Scope window is docked as a
"Slider" .  When NOT using Scopes , Scope's window is
slid to the right , to  "close" the scopes windows ,
which reveals the full size of the top right quadrant View window .
When using the  Scopes , slide scopes toward the Left .
Doing this will make the View window to become smaller ,
while the Scopes become Full size in the  upper Right quadrant .
i do not need to see a large  Video View , when viewing the scopes .

The  Time code stamp sits in it's own dock ,
just below the  Viewer .  As a floating window .
( i get a larger  digit display , and it sits
immediately below the  Viewer window , convenient location )

Below the  time code digit window , is the
Device Manager window , sitting in it's own dock ,
as a floating window .

below that , in the Lower Right quadrant , are the
main 4 or 5 windows of Vegas interface .
All docked on top of each other .
Click each Tab , to select one of the interface windows to view it .
Left toward Right Tab listing :
Media Pool  Explorer  Generated Media  Transistions  FX  Trimmer .

On top of those 6 interface windows ,
is the large Surround Panner , docked as a  "Slider" window .
i slide the panner to the Left to "view the Panner"
when not using the Panner , i slide Panner back toward Right
to close Panner , then i can view the 6 Tabs of interface again .
Typically , i never use the 6 interface Tabs , when working with
the Surround Panner ,... so sliding the Panner on top of those
6 interface windows is no problem . ( share the same space )

On top of the Surround Panner Slider window ,

is the  5.1  surround  meters window .

docked as a Slider window on top of Panner window.
( "Preview level meter" is  OFF )
To turn on 5.1 meters to see them , go into
Properties  Audio Tab and select 5.1 instead of  Stereo .

The 5.1 meters are slid to the right to make just more Room , and then is Never moved again . only the Surround panner window is slid left , when needed . Thus the lower right quadrant is one docked monolith set of 8 windows . And this monolith set is , itself a floating window , as it is NOT docked to the Time Line .

Be sure to Save your Custom Layout . ( Vegas Menu :  View-->Layout )
Be sure to Backup the Layout file , to a USB drive .

Every window has a  Text  Tab . Left mouse click
hold and drag the text Tab to undock\move a window .
When re-docking , press and hold  Ctrl  key .

The above has always been my pro Layout . Conceptually ,
the very first time when i was "getting there" , took a few hours .

i always want a large "vertical stack" of tracks .
track width is no issue here .
Large Viewer is  one fourth the physical TV\monitor .
i have easy access to Scopes , large scopes .
i have larger digits  time code that sits with the Viewer .
i get to see 5.1 level meters ( always visible ) .
i have easy access to the Surround Panner .

note about the  Viewer :
i always keep Transport control  OFF .
i always keep Top menu bar of  Viewer screen , OFF
Thus , the  Viewer is "Just the Video" , no wasted physical space .
Space bar to pause\play . Transport buttons are at the bottom
of the  time line anyway .

P.S. This login made a new forum profile , all previous stats are gone !

didn't realize I was at vegascreativesoftware forum . ok .

Magix profile is still there . 2 different forum locations .
