Mackie Control Surface Support

BigDuff wrote on 5/9/2012, 2:04 PM
Just got a Mackie Control Universal Pro.
Mackies' web site states that the Control Universal Pro is compatible with Vegas.

How about Vegas Movie Studio Platinum HD11? I have looked and looked and dont see where or how to enable a control surface option. Would be really nice to be able to use the transport controls, markers/jump to markers, and the jog wheel.

As far as I am aware External Control Surface support is only available in the full (Pro) version of Vegas, not in any of the cheap versions (the various Studio versions).

Woops . . .
Mackie website clearly states it is compatible with "Sony Vegas Pro." There is no reference given to Sony Movie Studio.

But I'm curious -- you buy a $999 control surface and you are upset it won't work with your $99 software? With that kind of money, you can easily upgrade.

Was no woops.

It works great with all my DAW software.

And I am curious.....You respond but dont offer a solution or pretinent information.

I beg to disagree...musicvid is one of the most pertinent solution and information sources on this forum. He's also one of the few long-time experts who frequently come to the 'non-pro' forums to help.

I agree with vkmast....musicvid is one of the most helpful here.

Bigduff.....he did provide you a solution in that one has to "upgrade" but you just didn't like the response.

Good luck....

"You respond but dont offer a solution"

The solution I offered is to point out that the upgrade to the professional version of Vegas is reasonable in light of what you have already spent. There are also deals on the upgrade from time to time.

". . . or pretinent information."

Mackie did not mislead you wrt compatability with Sony Vegas as you suggested. Seemed pertinent to me.

Really, it sounds as if you are a person who would benefit from the automation controls and added benefits in Sony Vegas Pro. I would also suggest you download and put the trial version to the test before plunking down more $$.
;?)

musicvid,

I am a video neophyte. MCU support would have been nice but for what little I do is not really a necessity.

A few months ago I was asked to produce an original music bed and apply pre-recorded voice overs for a vid. Hence VMS-HD Plat-11.
It has since become a nice little once or twice a month partime paying project. My music, their voice overs, synced up and rendered in my home studio.

During this time I have bought myself a vid camera and have put together a couple, oringal, music videos, but I am sure I am not even scratching the surface of what VMS can do. The Pro version would be wasted on me.

Thanks,

Duff

BigDuff......

I'm 65 years old now and I've played in live bands/been a musician/songwriter and recording originals since the early 70's.
I use Sonar but not all music programs are good for importing and scoring video and not all video programs will accommodate your needed audio compatibilities.

I don't mean to sound smug BUT...
IMO....it appears you merely presumed the MCU with VMS was supported without making sure prior to purchase.
All of us have (likely) made the same purchasing error before...including me.

If you're really doing music at the level you state think of the 'upgrade' solution as a professional investment for further jobs/gigs in the future and enhance your knowledge.

That's my take on it.....good luck.

MCU support in VMS was an after thought and not a driving factor in it's purchase. I saw and read the Mackie site prior to purchase. They only list Vegas Pro. I just thought maybe, just maybe there might be limited support in Movie Studio and I was somehow missing where to instuitute it in the menu system.

What programs people use to get the job done is a matter of personal preference and personal workflow. I, myself dont care for Sonar, however if it works for you I say great!

Oh yes....I agree that music/video software is quite a subjective choice based on one's desired 'work flow'.

To me....the programs we use are just tools for us and all are good and have their merits.
Me...I just happened to have grown up with Sonar when it was just a midi program back in 1993 or so and had no need to change.
I don't think I have sufficient neurons left to learn a new paradigm anyway.<grin>

I'd shoot from the hip and guess you're using Cubase if you're in the UK.

Good luck with your music projects.....back to topic....
