Have you tried playing with the Auto Ripple settings?

Auto Ripple (which controls how the events/clips on your timeline move or don't move when you're adding, removing and trimming other events) can be set to ripple only events on one track, ripple all events on all tracks -- or not ripple any events at all as you edit other events.

Yes I have used ripple as you suggest but there human frailty lets me down as I sometimes forget to switch it off or on and there is no obvious way of checking quickly whether it is off or on without checking the ripple button and having it on,Simple plays it one way or Advanced another.

Yes, it was unfortunate that they decided to hide the Auto Ripple button (among others) under the Config menu in MSP 13.

I assume from answers so far there is no alternative to my question.

Thanks a lot for your help and I will generate the thought patterns required.

I did think rendering the project in layers and editing layer 2 over layer one but the potential of making mistakes which will require me to start from scratch again is great.
