Movie Studio 13 Released

Tim L wrote on 1/15/2014, 4:51 PM
For those who might be interested, a new release of Vegas Movie Studio is available:

http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/moviestudiope

http://dspcdn.sonycreativesoftware.com/releasenotes/moviestudiope13.0.879_readme_enu.htm

I'm not sure how much of this we already have in Pro 12. (I bought VPro12, but still haven't downloaded it...)

The "Simple Edit" mode and support for touch screen operation is new.

If anything, maybe this answers something about how the next Vegas Pro will be named. Sony is not afraid of using the number 13.

Do not like the BIG buttons, sure it is nice if you have a tablet, but takes up much to much real estate for my tastes.

> "Do not like the BIG buttons, sure it is nice if you have a tablet, but takes up much to much real estate for my tastes."

Well... that's the whole point. The PC as a form factor is "dead". The tablet is the "new" Personal Computer, and Sony is on the bleeding edge to support it, especially in the Movie Studio market which is aimed squarely at consumer/hobbyist. I think it's a smart move on Sony's part. If you have ever tried (and failed) to use a Windows application on a tablet you would understand why... your fingers are too fat! This is great news that Sony is adapting to the new world of mobile devices.

Now before you go jumping on me and saying how the PC is not dead (this includes both Windows and Mac because I'm talking about big screens, keyboards, and mice here in general when I say "PC") It is NOT dead for content creators like us who still need to use big screens, keyboards, and mice to do our precision work. But for consumers who just check their mail, search the web, and follow their friends on Facebook, the tablet is quickly becoming the form factor of choice and Sony is taking advantage of the new opportunity by re-designing Movie Studio to be tablet friendly while still allowing you to switch to Advanced mode if you prefer the old style of interface. Very smart indeed.

I'm definitely agree John.
Though I haven't tried Movie Studio 13 by my own, yes, nice move.

Well..., some times ago, I saw on Sony Software Facebook page, a post about looking for Beta testers, especially to those who use tablets*.
I'm a bit uncertain at first, as, doing video editing in touch screen displays can be a difficult task - so only simple editing can be done... also, does SCS create new family of editing software?
*I just realize one of weakness from Apple's product world - I saw no touchscreen version of MacBookPro / iMac ?

On the other side, the release of this version, with XAVC-S codec support seems to accompany the new 4K 'consumer' handycam FDR-AX100... You got the camcorder, plus you got the editor right away...

Just a little input for next Vegas Pro if it is also being redesigned for touchscreen friendly:
- Make virtual jog-shuttle control or split/trim-in/trim-out buttons via external additional Window ?

Really pretty awesome for the price, for someone who doesn't need more than 20 tracks, and a few other pro features that Vegas Pro has..

Ohhhhhh... it supports touch. Just what I wanted! :D :D :D :D

Editguy43 wrote on 1/16/2014, 11:13 AM
I agree with you John about the tablet becoming more and more mainstream, and the move to touch friendly interfaces' is the way of the future I tried to edit some on a surface pro with Vegas PRO and indeed the icons and transport controls were way to small to use so in that case I applaud Sony for stepping up with the new GIU improvements, perhaps I can now justify getting a windows tablet to edit on. (man means I need to spend more money)

What I would like to see is the ability to modify the interface, maybe when you switch to advanced mode the GUI would revert back to PC display protocols or just have a menu item that would change the size of the buttons to reclaim some of your screen space.

I also noticed that you can no longer modify the toolbar which is kind of strange (unless they moved the option to somewhere else)

Paul B, I thought advanced mode can bring the icon back to smaller, but it didn't? There's no small/large icon selection?
Not a good one..., Usually sometimes I feel the timeline area always feels not enough large to me as default size of tracks are bigger than other NLEs... (Input for Pro 13 version...)

You know the 20 tracks thing. Why not just remove the limit. 20 is so many I don't think I've ever used 20 and I often use vegas as an image editior to make banners/headers which winds up using lots of tracks but I don't think I've ever needed 20.
set wrote on 1/18/2014, 8:01 AM
Well, that depends on the project is...
but for extreme complex or extreme a lot of images to be shown in the same time, that would be required.
Also, track limit is video and audio combined...
If you need to do such multitrack audio looping and mixing for example, you will need more than that.

Track limit is 20 video tracks plus 20 audio tracks.
One double-click and the track heights are half of the default.

It might be worth pointing out that the Movie Studio Suite includes Boris "Keys and Blends" and "Image Restoration" units. Along with Sound Forge Studio and Acid Studio, and some filters/fx from HitFilm. See the bottom of this page:
http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/moviestudiopp

These Boris units (consisting of many plug-ins each) include chroma, luma, and motion keying of various kinds, light wrap compositing, wire removal, (image) noise removal, image stabilization, etc.

The right-hand pane in these webpages show the filters/fx included in each unit:
http://www.borisfx.com/units/Key-Blend.php
http://www.borisfx.com/units/Image-Restoration.php

@JohnnyRoy -- You do tutorials for Boris. Do you know if these are the same as the full Boris CC units that normally cost hundreds of dollars each? The fact that you can buy the Movie Studio Suite outright for $140 and get both of these units included is really amazing. With the Sony 25% off email, I can upgrade my really old copy of VMS to the Movie Studio 13 Suite, with the Boris stuff, for only $60. What a bargain! I think my daughter's laptop will be happy about this!

(JR or Sony: Please let me know if this is not the case and I'll remove the above links to the BCC units. I don't want to mislead anyone.)

a screenshot of my MSP13 64-bit

Don't know if what's inside them is the same.
Tim L wrote on 1/18/2014, 1:37 PM
@vkmast: The Image Restoration list in your screenshot looks the same as what's listed on the Boris IR page. Your Key & Blend screenshot doesn't list everything shown on the Boris K&B page, BUT... I think the "missing" items are probably compositing modes. Does your compositing mode button in Movie Studio now list additional options? (like Light Wrap, RGB Blend, Boost Blend, etc.)

I have to confess I don't know much about these items personally, but they look very powerful for being included in such an economical package -- especially at the upgrade price.
