Movie Studio Platinum 13 crashes on every vfw avi

Wyverex wrote on 11/15/2014, 4:25 PM
Whenever I try to add media files which were encoded using any vfw codec (MagicYUV, Lagarith, DivX, MJPEG), Movie Studio crashes. No error message - it just does not respond anymore and its process has to be terminated.

MP4, M4V and so on work fine.

Windows Media Player can open and play all the files that Sony won't open. It seems, Sony can't use any DirectShow filters for some reason? I use the 64 bit version on Windows 8.1.

You might "Search Words" on the subject, "All Forums", "Any Date", "User Name" musicvid while waiting for him to chime in.
This thread might get you started.

All four of those codecs require separate installation by some means; none are native to Vegas. The fact that they are AVI vfw is probably coincidence.
Have you undergone a major system upgrade or reinstallation?

Please install the codecs individually from their respective developers. We can help you find the addresses. Codec "packs" are another name for Russian Roulette.

All these codecs are already installed.

Maybe something for the OP here?

These threads do not help. It makes no sense to post any MediaInfo here in my case, as I know exactly which codecs are used (as I mentioned for example MagicYUV, Lagarith or simply MJPEG). I have all the necessary codecs installed.

Also it's strange that Sony does not give me any error message but instead loads to death as soon as I simply CLICK on the files itself without even hitting the Open button.

Can Sony theoretically load AVI files that were rendered with MagicYUV or Lagarith? Did someone use these codecs already?

Thanks. So if for example Windows Media Player can handle Lagarith videos, why can't Sony handle it? Don't they both use vfw?

This sample file opens and plays nicely in my Sony MSP 13, as you can see.
Wyverex wrote on 11/16/2014, 5:25 AM
Sure. The question is why it doesn't work in MY version.

This was linked earlier.
>>>Vegas does not use installable codecs, except for AVI (Video for Windows, VfW) files. Typically K-lite only installs DirectShow files, which Vegas cannot use. The K-lite Mega version does install VfW codecs, but that only affects AVI files.<<<
When I need a specific codec for a specific file type, I just install that codec.
OS Win7 64.

As I wrote before (twice): The codecs ARE installed. Separately. No codec packs.

This is a forum of your peers, who are trying to understand your situation. Impatience won't help. Have you reinstalled Vegas?

Yes.

Do you see (e.g.) "Lagarith Lossless Codec" in the VfW templates' (Customize template) Video format drop-down menu?
Wyverex wrote on 11/16/2014, 10:40 AM
Where do I find that drop down menu? Sorry, I'm german, so the names are different.

As soon as I click on "customize template", Movie Studio freezes. Seems there is something going very wrong with the vfw codecs.
