MS 12, 64 Bit, Crash During Startup

DanVM wrote on 8/19/2012, 4:22 PM
When I start Movie Studio 12, the splash screen gets to "Initializing DirectX Video Plugins" and then crashes. I can run Vegas Pro 11 without issue.

In case it matters, my video card is an Nvidia GeForce GTX 550 Ti, and I'm running Windows 7 64 Bit on an i7.

I'm not sure where to begin to troubleshoot and would greatly appreciate your suggestion(s).

Dan,
do you happen to have both NB Titler Pro (in Vegas Pro 11) and NB FX (in MSPSuite 12) installed?

vkmast -

Please note that the included NB titler with V11 is Newblue Titler EX, no Titler Pro.

On a related note, I can say that I had both the NB Titler EX from V11 and the NB Titler Pro installed. Each time I tried to load the Titler Pro, VMS12 crashed. Uninstalling both titlers and re-installing only NB Titler Pro stopped the crashing (thanks to NB FX Support for that solution). The crash was a, "Movie Studio 12 stopped working". It wasn't a crash at the start-up. You asked a good question!

I'm also noticing that between the NB FX packages (including Titler), Sony's use of OFX and additional graphics card use, a substantial uptick on the forum re: GPU-related solutions...How up to date is your GPU driver?

Did you install 64-bit Movie Studio?

Markk655,
interesting as I have a similar kind of experience (which prompted me to ask the OP my question above).

I haven't had the NB Titler EX from VMSP11 and the NB Titler Pro installed. Instead I had both NB Titler Pro (in Vegas Pro 11) and the new NB FX MSPS12 (in MSPSuite 12) installed. I could not open either 64-bit or 32-bit of MSP(S) 12 after I installed these new MSPS12 bundled plug-ins ("application stopped working"). I then uninstalled that plug-in package and MSP(S) 12 works OK.

I got the same kind of (very quick) reply as you from NB FX Support. You should NOT have both Titler Pro and TitlerEX installed at the same time. I recommend uninstalling both and then installing only Titler Pro. The MSPS 12 package contains NewBlueFX 3D Titling and Video Effects, not NB Titler Ex, but neither of them is compatible with Titler Pro on the same machine, at least MSP 12 does not like it. As I don't have MSPPSuite 11, I don't know if NewBlueFX 3D Titling and Video Effects (12) and NB Titler Ex (11) are actually the same thing.
I should note that I haven't tested the latest 120814 version of Titler Pro yet.

To reiterate, I have MSP 12 (with Suite add-ons except NB MSPS12 FX bundle) and VPro 12 (b683 with NB Titler Pro) working on the same machine. I agree that an up-to-date GPU driver version seems important.

Check to make sure you have the latest version of QuickTime installed. VMS 12 crashes if you don't. It took me several hours to discover this, but it turns out it is documented on the System Requirements list.

Birk,
where did you get that? I see only this in Release Notes
Movie Studio requires QuickTime 7.1.6 or later. As a general rule, you are encouraged to use the most current version of QuickTime.
I'm using Qt 7.69 with no problem so far other than that I described above.

2nd line from bottom

When I reported a similar problem to the Sony TechSupport people they sent me a link to an article that said, basically, "be sure you have the latest version of QuickTime." AFter I updated my WT the problem disappeared.

Birk,
great that this worked for you and I do remember too that they generally recommend the latest version of Qt.
In all the MSP techspecs links the minimum system requirements still state Apple® QuickTime® 7.1.6 or later for reading and writing QuickTime files though.

I can't believe there has been all this activity and I never received notification of it! I remember looking for a way to "subscribe" or receive notifications to this subject and not finding any.

I'm anxious to try these suggestions!

"do you happen to have both NB Titler Pro (in Vegas Pro 11) and NB FX (in MSPSuite 12) installed?"

As a matter of fact, I do.

Dan,
See my post 8/21/2012 above and esp. the NB FX Support reply.

And you'd find this in FAQ (upper right corner here)
Can I be e-mailed when somebody replies to my post?

Removing New Blue VideoFX did the trick. Thanks all!
