new video clips/not working in VMS Platinum

mommakim wrote on 1/10/2014, 6:31 PM
I have Vegas Movie Studio 10. platinum...and have used it many, many times with no problem. I have a new canon Vixia HFR400 that I took some video with. I downloaded to my pc and it works fine (when I dbl click and watch in media player) I tried both recording choices on the canon: MP4 and .MTS. neither will play correctly in VMS. It's driving me nuts!!! Any suggestion?

Define play correctly Exactly what happens or does not happen.

Also is this the first you have tried to edit high definition video?

And ... what are the specs of your computer?

I have a Canon Vixia HF-R40 and use Movie Studio 12 Platinum 64-bit. Both kinds of files (.mp4 and .mts) work just fine in my system. I pull out the SD memory card from the camera and copy the files into my computer from an in-system reader. The files go into MS 12 routinely with no problems. Sounds like maybe you need an updated codec to be able to handle those files.

She could be referring to the preview window not playing smoothly at the same frame rate as the video.

If the Preview window settings are set to Best > Full, try changing it to Good > Half to see if that makes a difference.

Thanks for the help guys! YES, it plays correctly in the preview window...its in the timeline while editing that the video does not play smoothly. This is the first time editing High def video.

When you say an "in-system reader" do you mean a pc with the slots for the memory cards? That is what I do...take the memory card from the camcorder and download right to pc from the slot. I know they had different speeds or qualify of the SD card...could that be the problem? ...and don't know codec? Help is appreciated :)

Again .. what are the specs of your computer?
mommakim wrote on 1/11/2014, 9:54 AM
sorry...where would I find specs?

I'm wondering if I just need to upgrade to 12?

>>>where would I find specs?<<<
momma,
several ways, you could use directx-diagnostic-tool
Try to find info on your operating system, processor and memory under System as well as your graphics card name and memory under Display > Device.

>>>wondering if I just need to upgrade to 12?<<<
Possibly, but you need to know if your computer meets the minimum system requirements

Btw, did you try what MSmart suggested?

mommakim wrote on 1/13/2014, 11:24 AM
I changed the settings in Preview like MSmart suggested...no change.

Lemme get the specs and I will write back. THX

Go to the graphics tab/page of dxdiag and post your video card information.

From what I saw about your model, it has an integrated graphics card meaning it's on the CPU, not a separate card. This could be your issue. The dxdiag info will help us know for sure.

Depending on the video driver version you have, you may see some benefit if you download/install the appropriate driver on this page if the version/date is newer than what is currently on your PC:

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/Product/inspiron-570

It could also be that v10 just doesn't handle HD video that well as that version was released around the time HD video became popular. You could download/install a trial version of v12 to see if it handles your video better.

Hi MSmart,

I don't see a graphics tab...I have: System, Display, Sound 1, Sound 2, Sound 3 and Input.

I'm looking into the driver right now and GREAT idea to download the trial version of V12...then I will know for sure.

I'll keep you posted. Thx

Sorry, Display tab.

ok, keep us posted.

+1 for MSmart"'s post above (1/13).
And sorry I keep forgetting we don't read long lines all through any more :)
>>>Try to find info on your operating system, processor and memory under System

Edit: please note that the downloadable trial/demo on this site is as of Jan. 14, 2014 version 13.
mike_in_ky wrote on 1/15/2014, 1:33 PM
Yes, "in-system reader" means my PC has slots for reading memory cards. The speed of the memory card shouldn't be a problem since you are having a problem once the video has already been shot. If you are able to play the .mts or .mp4 files in Windows Media Player and they run smoothly, it's not the clips.

Sorry vkmast...take it eeasy on me....kinda a newbie with all this techi stuff :) Wow, I may check out the new version 13...thx for that info.

momma,
your graphics card is listed there as ATI Radeon HD 4200 and the driver date is 8/18/2009. You may need to contact your computer consultant.
The MSP 13 system requirements including GPU/graphics are here
http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/moviestudiope/techspec

You could of course test the new version to see if it would help with your current configuration.
mommakim wrote on 1/22/2014, 9:31 PM
thanks vkmast. I tried to download the free trial of ms13 and having a network problem, so gotta look into the system requirements! thanks for your input.
