No Preview.

Just trying to give some phone support to another local Vegemite.
Here's what he did. Hit "Z" instead of "Ctl-Z".
No dramas I say, you've just muted the video track, ha, nope. Seems like he had no track selected on the T/L. So we opened a new project and put some generated media on it, nothing in the preview window, zip.
Restarted Vegas, same result, Tried many things but no way could we get internal preview back working again, just a black window. Turn on the safe area generators, they appear in the preview window and when you hit Play they blink, indicating the Preview Window is being updated, every thing else works just fine, cursor moves, audio previews. Checked anything and everything that could possibly mute the vision, bus master, add extra tracks, you name it, I'm out of ideas.
Now this isn't the first time he's had this happen, just hit "Z" by mistake and killed the preview stone dead. He said last time he somehow got it to work again but didn't remember how, I'm damned if I can workout how he could make it happen period, I can't repro the problem at all.
Oh and we tried various amount of changing, enabling / disabling external preview as well.
Anyone ever seen this happen?
Bob.

You could always hold down CTRL-SHIFT while starting Vegas to reset it back to factory defaults.

Weird.

I can't find a way NOT to have at least one track selected.

I'd say he should reinstall.

Or hold the Ctrl key and click on the track header (this enables/disables the track).

D'oh! Windows standard deselect.

In any case, I still can't replicate.

Even with the tracks deselected I still have a blinking dot in the track number box. That's the track that gets muted when I hit Z.

Is there a way to really totally deselect all tracks? Could it be that some other part of the program had the focus?

Thanks for the effort guys. Yeah this one has me totally stumped too.
My advice to him was just to re-install Vegas, it doesn't take very long, in fact I'd spent much longer than an install would take on this problem.
But I had forgotten about the shift key to restore all defaults, have to file that one away for the future.

Just thought I'd give some closure on this.
A re-install fixed the problem.

And there's a very big upside to this. In passing this guy mentioned some problem he'd been having with his car, he'd had various suggestions as to what was wrong and what it'd cost, most likely the gear box was stuffed and that was going to cost $2,500. I did a bit of lateral thinking on what had happened and eventually worked out that somehow he'd bumped the transfer case gear level into neutral!

So a Vegas problem saved him $2,500. Try doing that with FCP.

Well, I know this is an old post (and I'm an old guy and even older user of Vegas), and I really haven't been doing much video editing lately (spend most of my time behind a still camera), but wanted to document my cooking technique to my son today, so took the video, transfered it to the computer, then to the timeline, happily spent four or so hours in Vegas 10 editing at which time the preview window went black.  I reinstalled but that had no effect.  Went searching Sony Creative Media only to find that it has been transferred here.  I just want to thank the posters in this thread, because it solved my problem.  Where, oh where would I find in my documentation that "Z" would mute/unmute the display in the preview pane?  To let you know how long it's been since I did any serious editing, until today, I had never heard of Magik, LOL.

Thanks!

. . . and to amplify my confession that it has been a long time since I was active, Del Callo was my handle then, LOL.  Wow!
