A fair upgrade offer will be good for me (although if it is jaw dropping I will probably take it if they insist!!).  I'm more interested in the improvements and how stable the build will be.

Would your jaw drop if the upgrade cost $1000?

Since their latest offer included a free upgrade to v14 for v13 buyers, I would expect the same free upgrade from v13 to v14.

A free upgrade for VP13 users would be good marketing, imho, because most Sony users would move on to the latest and greatest MAGIX offering.

Chienworks wrote on 9/16/2016, 4:55 PM

Well, not to be a wet blanket, but those who took the combined V13 + free V14 offer actually paid money to Magix, so Magix has gotten income from that offer. Those who already had V13 previously haven't paid Magix anything, so giving it away free to those folks would be expecting quite a stretch. Maybe half-price would be a good compromise, and also in line with previous versions initial offers.

You just said it yourself in the comment above Chienworks that you received VP14 free and that's correct as what you actually paid for was VP13.

I think you perhaps misread Chienworks post.  He didn't say he bought anything.

The current upgrade price for version 13 is $199.00 USD.  So for those who purchased the 13 + free 14, they actually received two version for $199.  One is a known and the other unknown (at least for a few more days), but nonetheless their $199 purchased two versions.

And I agree with Chienworks, "Maybe half-price would be a good compromise, and also in line with previous versions initial offers."

In addition to George's post, note that the current offers to upgrade older versions are available here

https://support2.magix.com/customer/vegas/upgrade

There's no upgrade pricing for VPro 14 yet there.

"Maybe I'm missing something here but I read and understand the advertisement as purchase VP13 and get VP14 for free."

I will certainly agree, as only you know what you read and understood.

"So what the $199 spent went towards was VP13 and MAGIX gave you VP14 completely free as a way of saying thanks for catching up with everyone else who bought the most current version of the software years ago."

It's a marketing hook, to raise revenue.  The deal isn't to allow user to catch up, Magix isn't making any money off of an old product version, that came as a part of the deal to develop new versions.  Without the hook 'free' for the version 14, there is no 'deal' because the current upgrade price is the same $199.  You can read it as you will, and I'm sure the marketing department is delighted about that.  The deal could have been $199 for version 14 when released and get version 13 free now.  The bottom line of those two deals remain the same, but I think very few would have jumped for it.  Anyway, I didn't intend to get off the path this far from your original post.  My apology.

Best Regards.......George

Wow, what a deal! 😲 But as the offer was termed as an ugrade to VP13, is it truly within the license terms to use it if one didn't actually upgrade?

Len Kaufman wrote on 9/17/2016, 10:46 AM

Just curious....does anyone have any idea how many VP 13 users there are out in the digiworld? You could then get some idea what it might cost Magix to make the aforementioned jaw-dropping offer. Maintaining the existing user base should be a big incentive for any company with a new product to jump start their sales.

I think you were the target with the $199 version 13 + free 14 deal that has now expired.  Currently you can upgrade from 12 to 13 for $199 (no free 14).  I don't think it will go up in price, so maybe sit tight for the release of 14 and see what the upgrade deal is in a few days.

Understanding that our friends at Magix are entitled to bring about the life sustaining revenue that will keep the lights on and continue further development of the software is a natural "given".

Magix started off with a great software (Sony Vegas), and apparently wants to carry on the familiar torch we all know and love to use.

Imo, what would be fair is a free (upgrade) to version 14 to the legal owners of the last two "pro" versions (12 & 13).

Take care of your obvious base and focus on retaining them for future revenue and perhaps some no doubt, hard earned profit.

I am a loyal Vegas Pro user and as long as there are no deviations from the core product that is responsible for my editing skills and professional attitude of the software, I will stay in the family.. I will look forward to learning as I go, which is what Vegas Pro facilitates to a certain degree.
