Picture in Picture Scaling in Movie Studio 16 Suite

Aaron-Gilbrook wrote on 7/15/2020, 7:25 AM

So I would like to add a photograph to my project. However, it is a portrait orientation photograph. So, I decided to scale up the image so it fills the entire width of the frame. However, scaling up the image I notice it is not of full quality (original image is 24MP), and appears pixelated when scaled up. I initially thought it was simply a preview thing, but even after rendering the quality of the image is still bad. Is there some setting I need to switch that allows me to scale up the image in full quality? Or is there another plugin I can use to achieve the same effect?

How did you scale?
On which track is that picture?
What is your setting at Options/Preferences/Edting for still images?

I scaled up the image by going into Video Event FX for the picture and going to the Picture in Picture effect I have applied to the image and dragged the bar next to "scale".

The image is placed in a standard Video Track where I have been placing the majority of my video for the project.

'Automatically crop still images added to timeline' is currently switched off.

Try to place that picture on a track above the other with trackmotion and use to fill the screen the Automatically crop still images on for that picture.

Interesting. I didn't realise scaling up with PIP gave such poor results. It is presumably only intended for scaling down.

The best results are obtained using Pan/Crop as it works on the original resolution of the image. Using Track motion gives a softer image as it works on the image starting at project resolution.

Yes I eventually came to the conclusion that scaling up using PiP was not it’s intended purpose. Using Pan/Crop to scale up does retain the quality of the image however it remains within the original dimensions of the image and so doesn’t fill the frame. The only way I could find to fill the frame with a portrait image was by first cropping the image to 16:9 in an external programme and then adding it to the timeline.

@Aaron-Gilbrook You should be able to fill the frame. Right click on the crop box and select Match output aspect (or similar words. I don't have VMS open at present to check).
