Please insert writeable disc

philip-hunt wrote on 5/28/2018, 10:24 PM

I'm using DVD architect Build 84 and trying to write to a brand-new Verbatim BD-RE. I get the message to insert a writeable disc. I tried to erase the disc--same error message. Tried another brand new disc from the same box. Same trouble. No trouble writing to DVDs though.

It may sound a stupid question but are you sure your disc drive can burn Blu-ray discs?

Stupid questions are often the best. But this burner has burned Blu-Rays before. Mysterious.

Were the other burns from the same box? If not maybe the box is faulty. My Verbatim BD-RE discs that I purchased four years ago aren't actually made by Verbatim, they are CMC not MCC (Verbatim's parent company). My Verbatim BD-R are genuine Verbatim (MCC) though. I've not had any problems with the BD-RE but I usually create an iso file and burn with other software that enables validation of the burn.

Perhaps. The pack doesn't indicate whether CMC or MCC that I can see. I'll pop out tomorrow and get a different brand to test.

The pack won't tell you. You need to use software that gives you details about the disc. There's so few disc manufacturers nowadays many "brands" are probably coming from the same source.

Many years ago when I first started burning CDs I had several boxes of Imation 650mb RW discs. One box was strange as Nero indicated it was 700mb. Eventually I discovered the discs weren't CMC 650s but MCC (Verbatim) 700s rebranded with an Imation label!

Some free software giving details about a Philips BD-RE as an example.

ImgBurn (v.2.5.7) (Discovery Mode)

VSO Inspector (v.2.0.2.0)

Both of the above apps give you also info on Read and Write capabilities/features of the device.

@vkmast - of interest whose label was on those discs?

A similar issue was posted about this last year. I think the solution was to use the OS to erase the BD-RE first. This formats it and then they were able to burn their Bluray project.

Maybe worth reading as well?

Good advice, but I tried that first.

In DVDA go to Options > Preferences > Burning tab in DVD Architect and clear the checkbox marked "Use legacy disc drivers". After you clear the cleck you will be able to format/burn blank BD-RE disks.

This is the solution. How amazing, that something reported in 2012 remains a problem. I have Build 84 of DVDA which is the last version downloaded a few months ago. Is that the latest version?

From Vegas DVD Architect (a.k.a. DVD A 7) latest build 84 online Help (F1), Burning preferences:

Use legacy disc drivers: Select this check box to use the legacy DVD Architect disc drivers for burning discs. Clear this check box to use the Microsoft Image Mastering API (IMAPI) disc drivers to burn discs in DVD Architect software. This can be useful if burning discs with the legacy disc drivers is not working as you expect.

This has been included in Help at least as of (Sony) DVD A Pro 5.2. Didn't you just say that this was the solution to the problem?

More great advice re these Hardware/Driver compatibility/configuration problems here.

Yes Build 84 is the latest. It appears by default the legacy driver box is ticked. I wouldn't consider it a problem as such. In hindsight perhaps we should have looked at the options first. But anyway you got there and this thread will be helpful to anyone in a similar situation in the future.

I don't use DVDA to burn so I have not even noticed this was ticked. But it makes sense it could cause problems with newer burners and media.
