PNG image is only semi transparent?

bk-bBK wrote on 8/7/2020, 7:16 PM

So ive imported a PNG image that is fully transparent background to overlay on top of the video track. It is however, coming across as like the background is semi-transparent....but not fully. As you can see in this screenshot, you can see the images is boxed in a semi-transparent darkness, and is very obvious when i use track-motion to scale or move the image around the video track.

I do have the source image set to "Alpha: Straight Unmatted" and ive messed with the video tracks Compositing mode, in which Source Alpha works best...but its still not fully transparent background.

Is there a workaround for this?

@bk-bBK

Post the original PNG on a file sharing site like dropbox, onedrive, google drive, etc. and post the link here. Someone will inspect it and help you analyze your issue.

@bk-bBK  What version of Vegas Pro are you using?

I tried your PNG image on Vegas Pro 18 (Trial Version) and Vegas Pro 17 and everything is fine as you can see below:

I did not change the image parameters.. everything is set to default.

It also helps to share your system specs to help analyze your problem. You can share it in your SIGNATURE like mine.

Interesting that you got it to work on Vegas 17. I'm also on Vegas 17.

I'll have to post my specs a few days from now, I'm not at home and away for the weekend. I'll post again when I return.

Thank you all for helping thus far....

Looks good here too. Maybe it's because your preview quality is set to preview-auto. Best-full might help.

@Howard-Vigorita Well on my case, changing the preview quality to any setting does not cause that semi transparent problem, but maybe this could change depending on the system specs and configuration!

I'm not sure it has to do with preview settings. When I render the video and it's exported out ....it's still looks like that.

I'll post my system specs when I get home on moday

Howard-Vigorita wrote on 8/8/2020, 2:05 AM

There's a similar setting in the setting in project properties, "Full resolution rendering quality", that can also be set to best.

Which compositing mode is selected for this video track?

Edit:
I see you already mentioned you use "Source Alpha" as compositing mode which is the only correct one.

Your PNG works fine here.

By just default workflow, I can have as expected.

Media Properties Alpha Channel setting is Straight (Unmatted)

Did you apply an FX to the event or to the track?

The only effect I used for this png track, is "track motion". I have it set so the image stars off smaller than it's original size....and gradually grows bigger over time. This is how I noticed this weird semi-transparentness because the edges of the semi-transparent stop at the edge of the video track dimensions, which is only really noticed untill you shrink/grow it by using track motion

Marco. wrote on 8/8/2020, 12:11 PM

Which build of VP17 do you use?

@bk-bBK  I remember long time ago that I once had identical problem which was not solved until I deleted the project, restarted my PC, and created a new project then problem was gone! Give it a try, who knows!

I have a funny feeling this is it. I have other projects that use PNGs and never had this issue......but it's only happening to this specific project

@bk-bBK  Then most probably creating a new project will solve the problem. And even better is to restart your computer before doing that, just to be in the safe side.

Also, I previously had weird problems with some projects, but after trying everything I know, creating new project was the only solution. Sometimes, some projects for some strange reason gets cursed 😅

There is nothing wrong with your PNG. Might try it in a fresh project.

bk-bBK wrote on 8/10/2020, 10:29 AM

As everyone suspected, its simply a bug in this project.

When i created a fresh brand new project and used the same assets (png image, backgrounds, etc)....everything appears as normal and working fine. Weird how it was isolated to one project like that with the very same assets.

But i thank you all for contributing and diagnosing this with me! :)
