Post-render flicker in dark-areas of video

Darthbrandon14 wrote on 1/22/2014, 1:35 AM
I am new to these forums, so I hope I'm posting in the right place.

I've been editing with Vegas Movie Studio 11 for a little while and have noticed an annoying issue during playback.

I make short films, and use "Computer RGB to Studio RGB" levels setting when I export to keep the colors intact after grading. However, whenever I do this, there is an annoying, bluish flicker in the darkest areas a lot of the time.

Does anyone have any idea how to fix this, or what it even is?

We don't know what you've rendered.
Post Mediainfo properties, or better yet, upload an example to a fileshare.

I uploaded this short film to youtube, and the issue shows.

At about 4:05 the issue is very apparent and glaring. What do you mean by mediainfo properties?

Post what shows in Text View.

Forgive my lack of knowledge on some of this stuff... I'm not great with the technical details

I'm getting the mediainfo

A file that has been processed by Youtube is of no help whatsoever.

I suggested you upload an original example to a FILESHARE.
That means Dropbox, Google Drive, Mediafire, Rapidshare, etc., etc., etc., etc., etc.,
The purpose of doing so would be so we could download it, examine it, and try to replicate or suggest a workaround.
Thanks!

I sent my logo through vegas and added the levels (as always to get correct color) and the weird bluish-flicker came through again. If there's anything else I can do to help, please let me know.

However, I will be away this weekend on a shoot

-- There is no shadow flicker in your video. I stepped through frame-by-frame on a variety of players and the Vegas preview. This has something to do with your monitor or TV.
-- You aren't viewing on a CRT display by chance? Your video frame rate is 23.976, which is incompatible without some form of telecine.
-- Your levels filter, in this example anyway, is not applied correctly. It belongs on the output, with a blocking track added below since you are using generated media. As it is, your luminance is clipped at [0,255] which is not right for your output format (mp4). Again, those levels would wreak havoc on a CRT, but there may be something else at play here.
-- BTW, your Youtube upload didn't show any flickering here either. There was some banding around the point you mentioned ;?)

Darthbrandon14 wrote on 1/24/2014, 6:42 AM
Perhaps banding is the issue I'm seeing? I'm still fairly new to the color editing so I'm new to terms as well...

How would I correctly apply the levels?
musicvid10 wrote on 1/24/2014, 1:12 PM
The output fx button is on the Preview. Use the Computer->Studio RGB Levels preset.
You need to place a black blocking track below everything else because you are doing generated media. Use the Solid Color media.

You are not going to eliminate banding on Youtube no matter what you do in Vegas.

Darthbrandon14 wrote on 1/29/2014, 9:54 PM
Will different render settings cause more banding BEFORE youtube? I'm really interested in removing that problem, cause it makes the image look really ugly to me.

STOP........

Answer musicvid's questions in his 1/23/2014 8:30:09 PM post.

I'll add one, have you tried watching it on a different device for comparison?
Darthbrandon14 wrote on 1/30/2014, 2:32 PM
No, I am not using a CRT monitor, I'm using a flat-screen LCD monitor. I'm running from a laptop.

Yes, I have tried viewing from a different device, but the banding remains. That is apparently the issue, as musicvid said, so I'd like to know how to reduce that.
