Preview Window Size

Robert-Costo wrote on 1/9/2022, 11:33 AM

I have Movie Studio Platinum 15.0 and I have My Project Preview Window Set to 1920X180 and it is Docked on the Bottom Left Side of the Screen.

But the Preview Size Says 480X270 and I would like it to be 720X480 but I can not get it to change.

I Un Dock the Preview Window and then Drag it to be Bigger or Smaller but the Preview Size stays at 480X270 and I know I did this before.

I know I would Un Dock the Preview Window then Drag it to be 720X480 then Re Dock it.

If you wantto know hoe to set such a template click the button "Project Video Properties" and choose the right one and apply it

I know how to Set My Project Window I Set it to 1920X1080 I am Talking about after You Set Your Project Window Size.

On the Bottom Left Side of the Preview Window it Says Project Preview 1920X180 and this is Right.

But Right Under this it just has Preview 480X720 and I use to Un Dock it and Drag it to Say Preview 720X480 and then Re Dock it.

But like I Say I can Un Dock it and Drag it to be Bigger but the Preview Number never Changes.

I know I am forgetting something?

What you see underneath is the preview setting when the place for that cannot handle the projectproperties, sometimes if your totaal screen is big enough to see that preview you have to choose

I Thing I am Asking this in the Wrong way?

As Far as the Project Preview 1920X1080 I know this is My Project Preview it is Telling Me.

But I would Un Dock the Window and Drag it and as I Made it Bigger just the Preview Numbers would Change.

After I got to 720X480 then I would Re Dock the Window and the Preview Numbers would stay at 720X480 but the Physical Size of the Window would be Small again to Fit where I Docked it.

I Think I Asked it Right this Time?

The Preview indicator in the Video Preview window represents the setting of the Video Preview Quality button.

See more in the screenshot.

Ok in the Drop Down List on the Preview Window if I pick Good or Draft or Half they all have the same Sub Menus.

So if I Select Draft I know this is a very Poor View of the Video I get this.

But if I Select Draft and the Sub Menu Full it Says 1920 1080 so what is this Telling Me?

Yes all the Quality settings have the same Sub Menu.

But if I Select Draft and the Sub Menu Full it Says 1920 1080 so what is this Telling Me?

It's telling you that your Preview render quality will be draft quality based on a 1920x1080 image size. But this doesn't mean your preview display size will be this. That will depend on the screen pixels available.

In the image below I've put it on Best (Full). So it's showing the best render quality based on Full 1920x1080 image size. But the Display size is only 612x344 because my preview area only occupies part of my 1920x1080 monitor screen.

For good understanding: the Quality settings: Draft, Preview, Good and Best sets only the type of scaling algorithm, field handling, field rendering, framerate resampling and use of proxies in the preview and has nothing to do with the resolution of the preview. Changing preview quality from preview to good or best can dramatically slow down the smoothness of the preview, depending on used footage without given a visible better preview. The exact use and meaning I can publish later today (when at home).

The sub menu settings: auto, full, draft, half and quarter sets the resolution used for the preview and has nothing to do with the resolution of the preview display. Using a setting of half or even quarter (or auto) instead of full can dramatically improve the smoothness of the preview and depending on the size of the preview display you won't see a difference.

As shown in the screenshot from EricLNZ, the preview window gives three types of resolutions, first the project resolution, below the resolution used for the preview and right the actual resolution of your preview display.

As an example: Project settings=1920x1080, Preview Display settings=900x506 (depending on size preview display). Preview resolution of full=1920x1080 gives the same image on a 900x506 preview display as a preview resolution setting half=960x540. Setting a preview resolution higher than the resolution of the preview display makes no sense and is a waste of resources.

When setting preview resolution to auto, Vegas will automatically change the preview resolution (from quarter to half and full) again depending on the size of your preview display. Is the size of your preview display smaller than 1920x1080 than the preview resolution half will be used (960x540). Is your preview display smaller than 960x540 than preview resolution quarter will be used (480x270).

So I Selected Good and the Sub Menu Full.

Now the Preview Says 1920 X 1080.

So if I Play what is in My TimeLine witch is My Project Size 1920 X 1080 the Preview Window will Show Me the 1920 X 1080.

But it will show Me it as a Good Version.

Do I have this Right?

3POINT wrote on 1/12/2022, 3:03 AM

As said before, the setting Draft, Preview, Good and Best have nothing to do with the resolution of the preview but with the scaling algorithm, field handling, field rendering, resampling and proxies applied to the preview. They determine the quality of the preview and not the resolution. Often resolution is mixed up with quality, higher resolution doesn't mean automatically higher quality.

In short:

Quality Draft

Scaling: point sample, Field Handling: OFF, Field rendering: OFF, Resampling: OFF, Proxies: ON

Quality Preview

Scaling: bi-linear, Field Handling: OFF, Field rendering: OFF, Resampling: OFF, Proxies: ON

Quality Good

Scaling: bi-linear, Field Handling: ON, Field rendering: ON, Resampling: ON, Proxies: OFF

Quality Best

Scaling: bi-cubic, Field Handling: ON, Field rendering: ON, Resampling: ON, Proxies: OFF

remarks:

Scaling: Method of resizing.when source resolution differs from output resolution.

Field Handling: De-interlacing of interlaced sources

Field Rendering: When output is interlaced, Vegas will internally render at field rate to achieve smooth motion an FX interpolation.

Resampling: Resampling becomes active when Framerate differs (also switch dependable)

Proxies: Lores substitute files are used for preview instead of the hires original files (when created).
