Pro 14 to Pro 17 vs Suite ,.. content etc

Comming from Vegas 14 Pro to Vegas 17 Pro ,...

Questions about the suite etc:

1. Is the 4-5 extra main plugs worth it for a rookies everyday-use ?

2. In the comparing-sheme "Boris FX Continuum Lens Flare 3D" is strangely not included in the suite, while longer down in description it states the opposite, what should I trust ?

3. Can I still use proDAD Mercalli V4 and NewBlueFX Titler Pro Express from my version 14 purchase

4. Is better prices on these upgrades likely to appear when they are no longer new ?

5. Anything else to consider ?

Only you can make that decision. Only you can decide if the plugins will help in your creative decision-making in the editing process. The best way to help decide this is to go to Boris' website https://borisfx.com/products/continuum-units/ and look at the plugin examples under the Continuum Units product page. With regards to SpectraLayers, check Steinberg's website https://new.steinberg.net/spectralayers/ for the trial version.

If only one or two are attractive, an option is to get the VP17 Edit version and purchase independently from Boris the Unit - but first check out Boris' upgrade/support policy for individual Units as I think it differs from Continuum Complete which is based on an annual subscription.

3. Can I still use proDAD Mercalli V4 and NewBlueFX Titler Pro Express from my version 14 purchase

For some years now, it has become more and more common for plugins packaged with an NLE to be license locked to that version of that NLE, especially if a word like 'express' or SE or LE is attached to the name of the plugin. There is therefore a high chance that your VP14 plugins won't work in later VP releases - if they do, then that's a bonus for you. You might consider doing a search on this forum re those plugins to get more information - issues like this have been discussed many, many times over the years.

5. Anything else to consider ?

Leading on from the above, chances are that the plugins that come with the VP17 Suite will also be license locked to VP17 and may not work in later versions of VP (VP18 and so on).

4. Is better prices on these upgrades likely to appear when they are no longer new ?

Who knows? It's unlikely that any MAGIX employee with pricing knowledge is going to give you forewarning on the company's sales' strategies. If VP sales are booming, then a price drop is not all that likely. If sales are sluggish, then a price drop is more probable. The most likely chance of a lower price is in late November during the Black Friday and Cyber Monday events. But again - who knows?

4. As Dexcon said. Regarding Vegas Pro 16, the upgrade prices were occasionally offered at USD 50 less each (e.g. Suite at USD 299 instead of USD 349). The extras included as part of the upgrade offers varied from time to time.

Hi, I never used NewBlue FX titler as it was regularly crashing and I can do much more with Borix FX Title Studio but one sure thing is that you will not be able to use proDad Mercalli that came with Vegas Pro Suite 14. Also, I believe that you will lose the Mocha tracking tool integrated in Vegas Pro Suite 2014; yes, Vegas developed a tracking tool in later versions but Mocha is by far superior. As said in a previous comment, you can certainly go and buy individual Boris FX modules but you cannot buy them as upgrades, so you pay the full price tag... and it becomes very expensive. That is why I stick with VP Suite 14 because compared to VP Suite 17, I would lose a decent stabiliser and the Mocha tracking tool. Note that they seem to have upgraded the stabiliser this year but the one in VP 16 was still inferior to ProDad Mercalli V4...

@Marco. Thanks for clearifying !!!!

@Dexcon

Thanks a lot for your detailed and helpful answer

SpectraLayers,. no   Borisfx, 1 or 2 maybe ,.... hard to say at the moment not knowing whats up and down

Titteling, transitions, and shake-reduction,.. might be most on the wishlist, if VP17 is short on these I guess

(Travel-documentery, from the hills and MC action-cam, musicvideoes with colorfull efx, educational tech-stuff)

A special upgrade price was made available for Mercalli, after VP14, I think, not certain, $99. I purchased same.

@Former user

Thanks

You are right ,.. and the offer is still available

It seems like my serial-number does qualify

No matter what version VP17 I get, if Mercalli is very superior to VP17 own stabilizer, I guess its wort considering

I can see that the Sony AZ1 action-cam that I uses a lot is directly supported

Besides AZ1 used on motorcycle and kayak ,.. Lumix FZ1000 will be used a lot handheld ,..

BorisFX plugins are Far Superior to similar effects built-in to Vegas. Boris also has an excellent Tech Department you can "talk" with (Unlike Vegas). The nice thing is, during install of Vegas free versions of BorisFX Units, you can choose to allow all Boris Plugin 'Trials' to show up in Vegas and try them out (with watermark).

The important point here is, not only is BorisFX Continuum far better than similar effects built in Vegas, but the licensing is *not* annual.... it's perpetual! And it is *not* version specific!

I was suprised to find that the entire package works perfectly even in my Vegas 16 install! While the limited "Units" packages supplied with Vegas are *not* compatible in many cases between versions of Vegas Pro.... if you buy the whole package through Boris - it *is* cross Vegas version compatible.
