Problem with Alpha Channels?

I've been using Movie Studio for a few months now, I've gotten fairly used to everything. I'm working on a video and on one of my clips, It's cropped way inside the pan/crop output aspect. Of course, the background you see behind it automatically becomes black because there's nothing there. So I put a solid white background on the video track under it, I go to properties>Alpha Channel, change it to 'Straight (unmatted)' like I always do. But it doesn't change, it's still black. I tried restarting the program to no avail. I tried putting it on other alpha channels and got the same result. The video file is an mp4, like all the other files I've ever edited that always worked. Does anyone know how to fix this? Do I need to reinstall the program?

If it helps at all, I am using Windows 10, and my software version is 13.0.

After posting this I found out that it's the result of the Newsprint effect I'm using (as seen in the second picture), not the Alpha channels. However, I'd still like to know how I can fix this whilst keeping the Newsprint effect.

"You can specify whether you want Vegas Pro to process event video effects in your project either before or after any cropping adjustments to the event. Depending on the effect you’re using and the pan/crop adjustments you’re making, this can have a big impact on the final appearance of your video. Event pan/cropping is simply a part of the video event FX chain and you can place it anywhere within that chain. If you want to pan/crop before any video effects, you don’t need to change anything — this is the “Pre-Effect Mode” and is the default state. If you want to pan/cropping after the effects are applied (Post-Effect Mode), drag the “Pan/Crop“ button from the beginning of the effects chain and drop it after the button for the effect. You can set pan/cropping into post-effects mode for some effects in the chain while it remains in pre-effects mode for others." We cannot always be blaming the media :) This worked in MSP 13 Simple Edit mode, so I suppose it'll work in basic MS 13 as well.
