Proxy editing HD

Ulodesk wrote on 11/11/2015, 10:00 AM
I searched for "proxy" but did not find an answer in the several items returned.
I am using MS12 P in W7, i5, 8GB RAM, and shoot with a couple of older Vixia cameras in 1280x1920. I can do my usually fairly simple editing with the files imported directly, but longer pieces and additional effects and transitions can make the preview bumpy. I looked up proxy file editing in MS Help, but am having difficulty understanding how to go about it. It seems as if, after editing, the original files must all be re-imported and re-edited against the proxy files.

If this tool would offer a smoother editing process, is there a better explanation of how to create proxy files for all the clips in a folder, edit, and render? Or did I already understand the process correctly?

Thanks.

You create smaller proxy files for editing.
Then you replace them with the original media for rendering, the edits having already been made.
That's about it.

If you would like this workflow streamed lined, version 13 P has an option to create a proxy file, and when finsihed simply bring the clip to the timeline and MS13P will keep track of the original and proxy. Then after editing, MS13P will automatically use the original for rendering.

Thanks to you and the others for your replies.
I probably will skip v13, since v12 does all I really need.
The Zen tutorial method would be fine for a few files, but laborious for a piece with 20 or more files, and he mentions having to tweak color adjustment prior to rendering. I'll keep it in mind. Meanwhile, I'll preview at lower resolution and/or pre-render as needed to keep things running as smoothly as possible. Maybe in a few years I'll be able to get a desktop with more power.

If cost was an issue with your decission to not upgrade now, are you aware Sony currently has a 50% off deal for version 13. The Movie Studio 13 Suite is now available for $68.98 direct from your sony account (full version, not the upgrade). Movie Studio 13 Platinum is only $39.98.
