Question regarding upgrading

Crazymadman wrote on 3/29/2016, 4:47 PM
I've been using Vegas 10 for a long time and I realized it's definitely time to upgrade to 13. But I'm still working on videos in 10 currently, so if I upgrade to 13 will my files transfer over and work in 13? And if not, can I at least still have both versions of Vegas at once? Keep in mind for that last question that I plan on upgrading through download so I'm not sure if that effects it or not

Thank you for any help!

You can open version 10 files in 13 and it should be perfectly fine. However, once you've saved them in 13 they won't open in 10 anymore. Compatibility is only one way. Best thing to do is to make new copies of the .VF files for use in 13 and save the ones you currently have for work in 10.

Thanks for the reply. That's very good to know, and I'll be sure to copy them!

You might also consider upgrading to MS12 rather than 13 if you don't want to deal with the new interface. Last time I looked you could still get 12 from Amazon and probably other places on the internet.

MS13 is okay, but many people have been put off by the huge icons and inability to arrange the task-bar to your liking. There are a few good new features in 13, otherwise it is pretty much a downgraded version of 12 as far as usability is concerned. But, like anything, some people swear by version 13.

Just an observation. I have MS11, 12 and 13 but use MS12 about 99.9 percent of the time. YMMV.

Note that you may lose some of the third-party addon FX from your v.10 files in the 64-bit MSPlatinum 12 (and 13). From the Release Notes: "when using the 64-bit version of Movie Studio Platinum, third-party plug-ins will work only if they are 64-bit plug-ins. Please check with the plug-in vendor for available updates. You can share projects between 32- and 64-bit versions of Movie Studio Platinum installations, performing editing as needed in 32-bit Movie Studio Platinum and finishing the project in 64-bit Movie Studio Platinum."

As said you do not need to uninstall previous versions. You can have both 32-bit and 64-bit versions installed as well.

Jillian above mentions good points to consider re v.12 vs. 13. In addition, MSP 13 has the new easy Proxy Video Creation to help with video playback in the Preview Window.
As Doctor Zen says in his excellent review,"this is a big new feature which is sure to please anyone who experiences lag in the Preview Window on a regular basis."

And do not even consider the basic Movie Studio. If you upgrade, get Movie Studio Platinum (or Suite) 12 or 13.

I actually do kinda wish I read these messages before upgrading, as the UI and lack of customization is horrible. It's such a waste of space and absolutely madding to not be able to go back to the old look
