Random Freeze

Paffman wrote on 5/4/2019, 11:28 AM

Hi,

I have VMS v16 build 109, Win 10 64bit, i5 CPU, 8GB RAM and a speedy GPU which I have had to turn off! It always did freeze more that v14/15 but I have to live with it. Today it is freezing every time I click 'Media Generators' or dragging an affect to the timeline. I have turned off the GPU Acc under the video tab, but still freezing. I am at a loss and ready to move on to a different editing program...

Can anyone help?

I would just like to add that I have turned off my GPU, cleared the VMS cache and even without loading a project, it freezes when I click the 'media generators' tab and sometimes the other tabs rendering this program USELESS! I am in the middle of a time crucial project and I can't finish it...

What has changed in your system prior to today and after you last used VMS that it wasn't freezing when you clicked on the 'media generator' tab?

If it was working before and not working now, I always ask myself, what changed that could have effected it? A Windows update maybe. GPU driver update perhaps.

Even though you have yuour GPU turned off, VMS at least looks at it when loading, whether that is enough to cause issues if your GPU is running a problem driver or not I do not know, but it may be worth checking the GPU driver, and maybe even rolling back one to the previous version used, for a test.

Which i5 ?
Which GPU?
Which drivers for the GPU?
Which sourcefiles?
Which projecttype?
Do your hardware specs are allowed for the source and project settings you use?

Nothing has changed on my system from when I used it last, not even a Microsoft update, that is really confusing. I will look at the GPU driver, but that said VMS is now freezing every time I open it. Can I uninstall it and re-install it?

Eagle Six wrote on 5/4/2019, 1:05 PM

That is certainly an option, but if you use Control panel to uninstall you are probably going to have the same issue when re-installed. You can do a quick search for uninstalling VMS as there are a few tools you can use and methods to cleanup the C: drive and registry so you have a clean uninstall. Then a re-install (considering you said you have already deleted the cached application data) might do the trick. Doesn't take long and worth a try.

I will have a read up.... Where do I get the download from? Don't want to uninstall and can't get it back.

Much better than reïnstalling is to reset the program to its defaults by pushing Cter-Shift while starting

Some of us assume that he did try resetting  as he mentioned he "cleared the VMS cache".

One can download the program e.g. from here.

Hi, I have tried the Ctrl + Shift, but still the same.

Thank you for all your help thus far. I know VMS always has a habit of freezing, v16 more so, but I can live with an odd freeze as long as I save regularly. But now VMS is unusable as every time I click a tab it freezes. I will try to un/re install and go from there.

SOLVED!

After some reading up, I decided to uninstall all NewBlueFX and the registry info. I checked VMS and it worked OK on the media generators. Then I reinstalled NewBlueFX Supreme and Titler and all is workling OK. So a glitch/corruption in NewBleFX?

Many thanks for all your help.

Steve

That pesky New Blue strikes again! Glad you got it worked out and reported back. May help another user down the road.
