Save button!

antbarron wrote on 1/17/2020, 9:58 PM

I just went from Movie Studio 15 to 16. Two questions:

- When I open the app, I am always presented with a Save As dialogue box. I don't want that. How do I stop it?

- The save button at the top of the page is 'Save As...'. Where is the 'Save' button?

It is very frustrating to constantly have to save a blank project I haven't even done anything in.... please help!

The only reason I can think of for you to see a Save As button would be if you opened a version 15 project in version 16 of the program because this will update the project file.

Save As is under the Project drop-down menu at the top left.

Steve - thanks for a quick response. Can you please have a look at this video:

Please let me know your thoughts.

There are certain restrictive features in the basic version of Movie Studio 16. The ones you mention seem to be such. I'm also still looking for "Save" in the basic version. If you haven't updated to build 158, try that to see if it helps any. But consider getting the Platinum version. The builds after 138 (basic) and 142 (Platinum) need Win10.

That's helpful thanks. Glad to hear it's not just me. Amazing that I couldn't find any other posts about this.... Perhaps there is a setting I just can't find, but if upgrade is the answer so be it...

@antbarron I'd be interested to know whether saving with a name other than "untitled" makes a difference.

antbarron wrote on 1/18/2020, 10:18 PM

Doesn't seem to make a difference.

Anyone else with thoughts... I mean, I know it's a small thing and just an annoyance, but how can major editing software not have a save button?!

Do we know for sure that upgrading to platinum gives a few more options in this area (including a save button?!)?

Yes, VMS16 Plat has a Save button and Save and Save As in the drop down Project Menu.

As @EricLNZ says. If your MS 16 is a recent purchase, you might try to get a refund and purchase Platinum instead. MS 16 is rather restricted compared to MS 16 Platinum and not regarded as a "major" version of the software. Besides that, the online Help of the basic version does not seem to be fully updated.

This article is about version 15, but fails to make a clear difference between the basic and Platinum versions. Only in the end there's this: "While VEGAS Movie Studio 15 does not contain all of the features mentioned here for VEGAS Movie Studio 15 Platinum, it does feature a number of them". This applies to v.16 as well.

The basic version of Movie Studio autosaves every edit in your project. When creating a new project you will be prompted to save the initial project file and from that point ever edit is then automatically saved. As a result, no save button is needed anymore.

Thanks Derek. Someone hasn't thought this through because when I disable autosave in the General Preferences, no save button appears. Therefore every time I choose to save, I still have to go through the extra mouse clicks of overwriting a file when I want to save. Shortcut is ctl-s.

The biggest annoyance is the forced opening of a project. I can't just open the app then start to create without knowing exactly where to save it (even though I have Autosave off!) or browse to whatever I want to work on. And once that 'Save As' dialogue box is up, there is no changing your mind - you must save something.

Not a bug, just a feature which is annoying. I know it's small, but I'd rather have Platinum if there is more flexibility in the save process.

That auto save preference refers to an automatic backup the app will use to restore your project in case of a crash. It has not relevance to main autosaving of your project.

All, MAGIX have graciously refunded me. I will be buying platinum this weekend! Thanks to this community for weighing in.

No save button is needed? I disagree completely. I don't want every change I make to be saved, especially if I'm trying something new and I might want to be back to a backup if it doesn't turn out the way I want. I am currently using Movie Studio 17. How do I get a save button? I don't want every change I make to be saved automatically.

I'm afraid you need the Platinum version for that. Please see some of the previous comments.

Agree. And I'm loving Platinum. Glad I upgraded.
