sony vegas deleted my files

korii wrote on 10/31/2020, 3:39 PM

so, I put some clips in Vegas pro 16 and decided to finish my editing later on so, in 5 hours or so, I saw that a clip was missing and said "Media Offline" and also got the error message that there was a missing file, so I looked in my folder to replace the clip and my clip disappeared, I also post on YouTube consistently and this effects me from posting, I wasn't able to post in a long time now so, I thought of asking staff, hopefully there is a fix! P.S I dont want to use a recovery app because i dont want to use it every time, it will bother me

Vegas will not just randomly delete files. If it indicated a file was missing, that's because it was deleted between when you quit using Vegas and when you started using Vegas again - it does not mean that Vegas deleted the file. The only time Vegas will delete a file is if you select it, tell Vegas to delete it, and then confirm you want it deleted and you do that from the file manager in Vegas.

The 99% probability is that your file got MOVED or RENAMED, not deleted.

It's easy to blame the software for any unexplained occurences, but in rwenty-two years on this forum there has never been a single proven case of file "deletion" other than by PEBCAC, and that's where your observation exists.

That's because there are safeguards, and they have been in place since day one.

If you delete file via VEGAS Explorer's tab... then it will seriously delete the file.

But if you delete from Project Media tab... then it will only just remove from project list.

But will ask for confirmation first!

@Musicvid not quite correct. I had an issue in an earlier version where Vegas would start deleting files while I watched. It was resolved in an update but never acknowledged as a bug. So it can happen. I have seen it, but not since that version (which might have been 8 or 9)

Musicvid wrote on 11/1/2020, 10:04 AM

My use of the acronym PEBCAC implies user intervention, not poltergeist theory.

Vegas is nondestructive, in the classic sense.

Former user wrote on 11/1/2020, 2:05 PM

I have no idea what PEBCAC means.

It was all just a LFB, no support actually wanted.

@korii

I'll give you some advice anyway.

"on one of my edits, I never closed Vegas, randomly I was editing and it randomly said file missing,"

Do you believe everything that an O/S or application presents in a pre-programmed message?

"I never deleted any file,"

That doesn't mean that a drive didn't fail or a network or USB connection didn't fail. Check the Windows Event Viewer.

"I am really confused, it deleted every clip! i need a fix asap"

There is nothing that the forum members or anyone else can do if the files are actually deleted, no matter what caused it. There is also no reason that a professional editor should ever lose any source media. I'll describe my workflow.

1) Shoot and copy the camera files to an NVMe work drive.

2) Put the camera SD card(s) back into a four card rotation and immediately replace the card in the camera with the least recently used card in the rotation.

3) Copy the newly transferred media from the NVMe disk to an 8TB spinning archive disk. Incidentally, I have a switch that allows me to power the 8TB disk down when I am not accessing it.

4) From time to time, I copy the Project folder from the NVMe disk to the 8 TB Archive disk.

5) When a project is finished, I copy the whole project folder from the work drive to the Archive drive.

6) From time to time, I copy the contents of the Archive disk to a duplicate drive that I keep in another location.

In my case that was not the issue. It actually started deleting while I was working. I posted it at the time. I had to crash out of Vegas to stop it.
