From VMS Help:
Move multiple events along the timeline
If you want to move an event and all subsequent events on a track, right-click the event and choose Select Events to End or turn on Auto Ripple

To use Auto Ripple to solve your probelm, do the following: Place the cursor/playhead at the beginning of the gap you wish to close. Drag your mouse ABOVE the cursor to the end of the gap. You should see a blue line above the timeline.

Go to the toolbar and click on Auto Ripple (mouse over the buttons until you find it with a tooltip if you're not familiar with it). There is a dropdown list to the right of it. It will give you choices as to whether it just affects a track or all tracks. Make the choice appropriate to what you need to do. Press the delete key on your keyboard.
The gap will disappear and everything will slide down together to the left. Make sure you turn off Auto Ripple, otherwise your next editing session might be rather colorful.

Thanks to both vkmast and Bob. Easy when you know how. Mike

Rather than trying to drag a selection across the gap, it's a lot easier to double-click inside the gap.
