SV Platinum 9 rendering crashes

Hello!

I've been having some trouble today in rendering a video with Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9.

I'm confused because it was working fine up until earlier today, but now, even when I try to render a 5-second clip, SV either: renders up until a certain percentage and gets "stuck" (doesn't render further) from there OR it seems to be rendering fine until the program completely crashes and I have to start it up again.

I have a pretty strong desktop computer that works well, so I doubt that is the problem.

These are the things I've tried to do, to no avail:
- deleting any extra tracks
- copying and pasting the project into a new one and then rendering the duplicate
- rendering different segments of this one project (even with varying lengths, but none of which successfully rendered)
- rendering a different project (it seems even my other projects aren't rendering now)

I also attempted to remove the 2 gig caps from the program following blink3times' guide (this one: http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?ForumID=4&MessageID=650217) but was unable to save the new file which was supposed to allow for > 2 gig.

As for more detail on my project: I'm using MP4 clips and uploading it in a 1080p format for YouTube.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated! (:

(This is a cross-post from the Vegas - Pro forum, but I was directed here to get better advice.)

Desktop specs?

Does it always get stuck at the same spot?

Have you tried using 720p (at least to test)?

* Sorry, I'm not quite sure on where to locate the specs? (I use SV as a hobby and I'm far from a computer expert and so my knowledge is relatively limited.)

* No. At first, it would get stuck at certain percentages - but these varied - and as I mentioned, I tried on different clips only to have the same problem.
Now, whenever I attempt rendering, it just gets to about 30-40% and crashes.

* Yes, and to the same result of crashing.

Specifications... How fast (2 GHz?) How much free space on your hard drive (GB)? How much RAM?

Have you tried making a brand new project with a completely different clip (even a sample one downloaded from the internet and then rendering that?

In Preferences, how much RAM is allocated to dynamic RAM preview? Try setting it to a low value (128 MB?) also try reducing the number of rendering threads (also in prefs) to 1.

The 2GB patch you mention is for RAM (memory) not hard drive file sizes.

Have you rebooted your PC? If all was working fine but suddenly stopped, restarting the PC may resolve your issue.

* Ah, okay; specs are:
- 2.4 GHz
- 186 GB free space
- From my research, I believe the RAM is 2 GB?

This is the website I used to check the specs: http://reviews.cnet.com/processors/intel-core-2-quad/4507-3086_7-32306915.html

* I tried making a new project with new clips and those were successfully rendering.
To go along with this, I tried copying and pasting this troublesome project into a new file (so ultimately, made a duplicate) and to no avail as the dupe crashed, too.

* I've also altered these preferences and I tested a render on a 6 second clip of my video: the first time, I rendered until 26% and froze, so I had to close and reopen SV and the second time, the same thing happened - only to 24%.

Like I said, this project was rendering fine for me to begin with and only later did it start having these rendering crashes, so I'm not sure what changed that...

Ah yes, the classic "did you try turning it on and off?" :)
Yeah, I have and multiple times too. I was even considering re-installing SV but I believe that would require my serial number, which I don't have on hand.

See (e.g.) Help menu > About... > General tab.
As you "tried making a new project with new clips and those were successfully rendering," it's probably not helping though.
Maybe something got corrupted?

Thank you! I may try the re-install later then, if nothing else seems to work.

Also, what exactly do you mean that something got corrupted? A source file? The project file itself?
And if this is the case, do you know of anything that would help that?

janey,
you might try to find a *.vf.bak file of your project in your project folder, rename it without the bak and see if you can work with that. If that does not work, I'd cut the losses and start over from scratch trying to isolate (and discard if you can't replace) the possible offending file.

Please clarify I tried copying and pasting this troublesome project into a new file

Did you have to windows of Movie Studio open then copy all of the events from one window into the timeline of the second?

Just making sure you didn't do a simple copy/paste in Windows Explorer. This method would retain any corruption, if present.

I tried to change the .vf.bak file, but that one crashed, too.

I ended up downloading a trial version of SV Platinum 12 to get this render done.
Next time, I will be on the lookout for corrupt files - thank you!

Yeah, I just did a simple copy/paste as this is what one troubleshooting video recommended.
If that wouldn't help though (which it didn't), how would it be different to individually transfer the files?

To copy the contents of a project to a new one, launch Movie Studio and open your project. Ctrl-a to select all events then Copy. Now launch Movie Studio again to open a second iteration of it. Then Paste. This effectively copies all events from the first window/project to the new. Do a Save As to give a new project name. All of your edits will be retained in the new. Any corruption from the first project won't be carried over to the new.

Ah, I thought this is what you mean by the "simple" copy and paste because this is what I did. As I mentioned, it didn't help, unfortunately.
MSmart wrote on 1/6/2014, 12:01 AM
Very good, sorry it didn't help.

Do you have any high resolution pics in your project? Is your PC a laptop or desktop?

Nah, it's alright - certainly not your fault that my SV is choosing to be picky ;)

No high resolution pictures. And I'm using a desktop.
