Switching off INTERNET? Yes/No?

Grazie wrote on 3/15/2020, 3:14 PM

Well, pulling the plug 🔌 from the Router-MODEM. Why? ‘Cos I’ve noticed my ETHERNET on TM switching in and out by the second. Now that I’ve Liberated my VP PC from the WWW I’m smashing editing times with no seizures or whiteouts.

So, has this been other’s experiences?

How have you 'liberated' your VP PC from the WWW? Doesn't it have to 'phone home' periodically?

Grazie wrote on 3/15/2020, 10:28 PM

As I said. I’ve not noticed anything it needs to do? What, would it need to phone home?

@Grazie

It periodically "phones home" to make sure that you have a legitimate license. If you ever notice a length delay in Vegas starting, it's for that very reason. I have all versions from 12 through 17 on my machine. If I haven't used one of the Magix versions for awhile, it will always take a very long time to start--for that very reason.

@wwaag - Yup, I know that one. But this is a continual DialOut sequence. This can’t be the License thing.

@wwaag - Sure, and when it does I’ll know now to plug it back in 😉!

@wwaag - Well, that’s interesting. So VP must have a Time Lock to run a routine to do that - yes? No, I’m watching a continual usage of my Ethernet, not big, but it’s there and it coincides with a VP Whiteout or hang. I’ve also experimented with suspending my AV s/w and removing my WAVES VSTs. I’m trying to think of any other licence grabbing Plugs I’ve got that would feel the need to wanna call mama. 😭

I’ll carry on with my theory, until such time as it proves a Red Herring.

I make sure that all automatic updates are set to manual, but then again there is something that always happens that is very mysterious.

The thing that clobbers performance from the minute you start your cpomputer until the cows come home is cloud backups. Everything you install these days wants to store your data. Just say no.

@Musicvid - What installs? Can you give an example? Or better yet, how do I “determine” which culprit is responsible?

Cloud backup and storage is insidious.

Google Drive and Microsoft.

My Netgear router.

Antivirus programs

Browsers and subscription services

You'll know when these are running when you hear a giant sucking sound.

@Musicvid - 😆. So, unplug - yes?

Musicvid wrote on 3/16/2020, 12:56 PM

Yes that, and checking what's using my system resources.

@Grazie

Hi

. . . . how do I “determine” which culprit is responsible . . .

When connected to the internet

  1. Open the Settings app - Windows key + I keyboard shortcut.
  2. Click on Network & internet.
  3. Click Data usage.
  4. Click the View usage per app link to view network data usage for all applications installed on your computer.
  5. Click Reset usage stats
  6. Close the settings window.
  7. Use the computer for about an hour then go back to the usage stats and see which programs are the heavy users

@Grazie I generally leave my internet disconnected for all the reasons you cite. But previous versions of Vegas seemed to phone home about once a month but would not balk till I tried to save an edit or render something. In which case it would unceremoniously exit with an error message and throw away my work. Didn't even save a bak file. Not sure if v17 still behaves as badly because I learned the hard way to avoid finding out.

@Howard-Vigorita - For now I’ve also got Edward’s AutoSave.

What a timely topic. Sometimes when I travel, there is no internet, but I would like to be able to at least rough cut edit. How often does the software need to "phone home"?

The only work around I've found to avoid the throw-away when not connected to the Internet is to do the save immediately upon opening the project. That way it'll bomb you out before you do any work. At the cost of overwriting your previous bak. Although I suppose a script or feature that causes a save immediately after doing the 1st edit should work almost as well.
