Temporarily Ignore Event Grouping in order to drag? NEW FEATURE PLEASE

JohnAsh wrote on 9/4/2016, 4:15 AM

I so often get frustrated with Vegas Pro during my Sunday morning editing sessions when the programme gets more and more esoteric features but not fundamental ones which would save my anger and sanity. Why on earth (and I'm hoping someone can prove me wrong on this), why on earth can't I click+shift and drag the video part of a scene, leaving the audio where it is temporarily (or vice versa) overriding Event Grouping? The way I work, I am for ever switching 'ignore grouping' on and off and, invariably, forgetting whether it's on or off. Grrrrr! I can shift and drag the edges but not the whole scene. Why not, please?

Make my day Magix and include it in the next version!! I'm pretty sure I used to be able to do this in Premier Pro.

(Oh, I did try and search for this using Google and "site:" to no avail.)

Maybe you try it with a right click on the event and choose
Group >> Remove From or Clear

Right-click on Audio event > Switches > Lock?

There's also the Lock Event button on the Timeline Toolbar ("prevents the selected events from moving along the timeline"). You should notice it's on/off and not forget...

Yes, thanks. I already have a button allocated to group/ungroup on my ShuttlePro but it still drives me to distraction. Maybe it's just me? "Shift drag" should not be beyond the skills of the software engineers in these post-Wright Bros days, I'd have thought! To me it would be a sensible extension to the already available shift+click+drag scene edge.

Sorry but the way you want get works fine
I can easely move one Piece of the Group on the timeline using "Ignore Event Grouping"

Ctrl+Shift+U

Yes, that toggles it on and off. I can do that with my Shuttle Pro button or clicking the icon in the tool bar. I want to do it temporarily while dragging. Rather than "Toggle Off" "Drag" "Toggle On". They did it for scene edges after all to assist creating J and L cuts which is exactly what I am doing but first I need to get the audio and video in the correct postions. I guess I could drag each onto timeline separately with a right click-drag but that again is pretty inelegant and required two extra mouse clicks each. I like "simple"!

I feel like I'm missing something here. What could be quicker/simpler than clicking on one button? Even a keyboard short cut involves 2 to 3 'buttons' doesn't it? There's also a script that locks a whole track if you want to go that way - but it still involves a click.

"Shift drag" to temporarily ignore event grouping would actually be a pretty cool feature. Holding <SHIFT> while dragging doesn't seem to currently be assigned anything else, so why not?

Quitter wrote on 9/4/2016, 7:06 AM

Sorry,
I've overlooked that he want it always temporarily

Holding the Shift key temporarily overrides snapping if it is enabled
When snapping is not enabled, you can hold the Shift key to temporarily enable snapping.

I agree it's not that onerous. But they thought it worthwhile to enable shift click to temporarily ignore grouping for dragging the edges, so why not the whole event? I would LOVE it and used it all the time in Premier Pro. Indeed the lack of this in VP almost drove me back to Premier, though the fact I'd invested a lot of my hard-earned cash in VP prevented that. I just assumed and expected that this simple feature would be "along very soon". Wrong!

What I have to do now is click, (ignore grouping), drag, click again (grouping back on). Repeat this thousands of times and it adds up! All I want to to is drag! Seems pretty simple to me especially as, as pointed out by Nick, above, Shift Drag does nothing at the moment.

Vegas Keyboard comnands:

And sorry, but if you must "repeat this thousends of times" it would be easier to:
click, (ignore grouping), drag thousend events, click again (grouping back on).
= Over 900 clicks fewer than in Premier Pro 😉

Does anyone else find that <SHIFT>+drag actually disables dragging? It does this for me in V10, V12 and V13 on both my desktop and my laptop. It seems to me that Vegas is reading <SHIFT> in this context as a way to control the events that are selected on the timeline (i.e. <SHIFT>+click selects a range of events). If so then it's either a bug or the manual and help are wrong.

  • When snapping is enabled, you can hold the Shift key to temporarily override snapping.

  • When snapping is not enabled, you can hold the Shift key to temporarily enable snapping.

Please test to confirm (or tell me I'm stupid) before I contact support.

NIck, try holding down the mouse LB, then hold Shift, then drag?

Still needs to ungroup/lock re the topic.

Quitter wrote on 9/5/2016, 3:54 AM

Yes, Shift+Click selects multiple events.
if you relase and drag the (highlighted) events again with Shift and drag them, snapping is overrided
the same you get if you select only one event with Shift and drag

We each of us use Vegas for our own ends, so our work flows are bound to be vastly different. For me personally, ungrouping is only used a very small amount of time, so clicking on one button is never going to bother me. If I had to ungroup a large amount of events, I would for sure lay them all out on the TL, then ungroup (or lock the relevent tracks) and do whatever I needed to do then. Just out of interest John, why do you need to ungoup/unsync so often?

NickHope wrote on 9/5/2016, 6:04 AM

Got it. Thanks guys. I need to hold down <SHIFT> after holding down the left mouse button, not before.

So, as <SHIFT>, <CTRL> and <ALT> are all used up as left mouse button modifiers, how about <SHIFT> or <CRTL> + right mouse button does a temporary ungroup?

My, no doubt, very inefficient way of working is to drag a scene up into timeline. Then I like to drag audio to the left to start before the video. Then I will trim either end of the scene using the new Trim Right, then Ripple, or Trim Left, Ripple, both of which I have stored on buttons on my ShuttlePro. I need them ungrouped to do the drag, then grouped for both to be trimmed, else only one will be trimmed (the last one selected). I am sure there's a better way of doing this, but that's me. Guess I started in Premier Pro doing this when I could do it so easily and have not mended my ways!

If shift, click drag is not available then Alt or Ctl click, drag would be just as acceptable! I'd also like to toggle selection between audio and video events by, say, pressing tab, but can't. I still have to click but I really don't want to be using the mouse that much. However, though I'm no longer in the flush of youth, but willing to learn new tricks anytime! Indeed I think I now qualify as an "Old Timer"!

Maybe I am confused, but doesn't this just throw the video and audio out of sync?

SHIFT+RMB or CTRL+RMB is used for:
Move Here
Copy Here
Shuffle Events

in VEGAS Pro
ALT+Drag is used for splipping
and so on...

As Arthur.S said. We need to see this as a feature suggestion like the OP says in the beginning.

Arthur.S wrote on 9/5/2016, 10:18 AM

I think what John is doing is keeping a straight cut for the video, but by stretching the audio, a cross fade between audio events. It's something I use myself now and then if the audio crossover sounds too harsh.
