The file cannot be opened by the installed version of VEGAS pro

NX42 wrote on 6/18/2023, 1:36 PM

I have a copy of Vegas Pro 15. This is is a fresh install on a new harddrive. When I try to open .veg files created earlier this year, also made in Vegas Pro 15, I get the error, "The file cannot be opened by the installed version of VEGAS pro, or the file may be corrupt."

To the best of my knowledge, there shouldn't be a version incompatibility because I've only ever used 15.

Upload the file to where we can test it (media not needed) and we can see what version it was created in by trying to open it in multiple versions. Version 15 will definitely open version 15 files.

By trying to use that so called Template.veg on my Vegas versions it looks very strange to me that this file is made in Vegas 15.
Vegas 15,16,17 and 18 would not open it with this warning

Vegas 19 was able to open it

Looks not normal to me that a Veg made in V15 only opens in V19 or higher

It's possible that I'm mistaken I suppose, but 15 is the only Vegas I have attached to my account so I'm not sure how I could have used another version.

I agree. It opens fine in VEGAS Pro 19 but not anything older. You must have installed the trial of 19 at some point and saved this file in it.

But I tried to open several of my .veg files, some of which took days and days to complete, and all return this same error. If "VEGAS Pro 15 Edit" and is the only Vegas product I have on my account, is it even possible to have used 19 to create, save, and export multiple videos?

Yess, the trial limitation is only the lenght of an exported file.

Downloading the demo for Vegas 20 let me open the files I need and export them into formats 15 can use. I'm not really sure how this happened, but this solves the problem I guess, so, thanks y'all.

I can't tell which version of Vegas created your project file: however, you last saved it in Vegas 19.

Unfortunately, backward compatibility in Vegas Pro is not possible - with one exception that being VP11 being able to open VP12 veg projects. Why not update to VP20 - there is a great offer at the moment depending on what part of the world that you are in.

You can copy and paste the timeline between the two versions (generally).

If you don't get the offer, please see this thread and/or this comment.

I actually don't have the money to upgrade right now, so that will have to wait. The idea of saving it in 19... I'm flummoxed as to how that could have happened because, again, I used whatever version I used (on a previous windows installation, to be clear) for over a year without any evidence of it being a demo, and unless I'm misunderstanding how to view the products on my account, I didn't pay for 19 - only 15, which is what I have a serial for. Strange things all around.
I managed to export the files I needed as an EDL text file which let me import it into 15 and save it in a usable format, so the solution is solved, just not the mystery.
