When you mean the small tracks, than you have to make the total high of the timeline smaller and than doubleclick the bar on the right side of the timeline that arises.
After done so you are able to make the total timeline smaller or bigger again.
Pictures say more than a thousand words so look

Regarding shortcut D see Edit dropdown menu > Editing Tool > Next Tool.

On a US keyboard, the shortcut to expand and collapse all the tracks at once can be simply be done by pressing the back quote/tilde key (`/~) at the upper left side of the keyboard. You can also go into the "View" menu to toggle the "Minimize All Tracks" option.
