Timing on an event

paul-priestley wrote on 8/11/2020, 6:30 AM

Hi, I am using Vegas Pro 18 which is brilliant. But a very naive question. Is it possible to click on an event and to see exactly, in terms of minutes and seconds, how far along that particular event you actually are? Obviously, I can see the the event length and the exact point in terms of minutes and seconds from the start of the video, but this info would be very useful.

Thanks

Paul

Add VEGAS Timecode as a Video Event FX?

aboammar wrote on 8/11/2020, 10:21 AM

It would be a good idea to add the ability to turn on/off timecodes for all events, instead of manually adding a Timecode Video FX for each event, which is time consuming!

Thank you for the solution. It works well and I agree with Aboammar it would be a good idea to turn on or off timecodes for all events.

Many Thanks

Scripting is our friend. If you have Vegasaur installed you could switch any FX on and off.

Scripting is our friend.

@Marco. Unfortunately, most users have zero programing background, thus will not be able to create scripts. This also means that it will cost them money to higher a programer to do it for them.

Besides Vegasaur to switch FX on and off you could also use the Happy Otter Scripts Info Bar to have a dockable info window with this values (amongst others).

Or for the most simple case just use the Vegas Pro core FX bypass button (which of course would turn on/off all FX used).

aboammar wrote on 8/11/2020, 11:09 AM

@Marco. I have Vegasaur and it still requires many steps, including selecting all events, before you can add or remove Timecode FX. Also switching the effects on/off (Enable FX/Bypass FX) is not working. Regardless, it still doesn't substitute having a toggle switch, to turn on/off the timecode for all events.

Version 12 has an add or remove timecode script included. You can make this a button. I don't know if it is in later versions. If not, I could maybe upload the script and someone alter it for later versions.

Why not? Did you select a wrong option? It works fine here.

Also see DougT's tip. Both scripts are available in the later Vegas Pro versions, too. Many ways to go.

@Former user

I tried those scripts in older version of Vegas Pro and I remember that something was wrong with them! Now I just tried them again in V17 and the timecode it adds to events does not make a sense! See screen record bellow:

OK, after some trial and error, I found out that either all events need to be selected in order for the Enable FX/Bypass FX to work OR this can be fixed by turning off that small switch SELECTED which I missed 😅

"Any idea what is going on?"

These scripts apply/remove timecode as Media FX, not as Event FX. And as such it uses the source media timecode which depends on your recording device setting.

It shouldn't be too difficult to adopt these scripts for timecode as Event FX instead. I see later.

Though I find the smartest solution of all is the Happy Otter Bar.

@aboammar

The Timecode effect will use the actual timecode recorded with the video if it exist. If not, it will start at 00:00:00. It appears your camera does record timecode and depending upon how you have it set, it might be time of day timecode.

And Event effx would reflect the timecode from the timeline, not the source which I understand is what the OP wanted.

Marco. wrote on 8/11/2020, 2:16 PM

Added as Track FX it would use the timeline timecode. Added as Event FX it uses the timecode of the event wrapper.

Former user wrote on 8/11/2020, 3:15 PM

Marco, you are correct. But the script does not access the Event FX timecode.

@Marco. Now that make a sense. However, this render those scripts useless!

As for HO Bar, I will check it out and see if its worth if for me or not!

I think he wants to show the timecode of the source footage so he knows how far into the footage he is. If I am wrong, then I will stand corrected.
