Titles and text appear sideways

dragonblade wrote on 10/28/2015, 12:45 AM
Ive just added text to the beginning of a short film and so far, it looks fine and normal on the preview screen. But when I view it on the timeline, the text is displayed sideways and is cut off by the left and right edges of the frame. I'm a bit puzzled. This has not happened before.

Most of the footage on the timeline is Standard Definition footage - shot from a MiniDv camcorder in 16:9 aspect ratio. Though the bit of footage where Ive placed the text was recorded in 1920 x 1080, 25p which of course has the same aspect ratio - 16:9. Although this bit of footage is completely black, I can see that the text has been squeezed into a really extreme aspect ratio. It looks like a really narrow rectangle - definitely not 16:9.

I guess I could record some black footage with my MiniDv footage and use that as background for the text and see if that solves the problem.

What are the project settings? Legacy text?
dragonblade wrote on 10/28/2015, 2:00 AM
I just used the default text.

For project settings, it says: 720 x 576 x 32, 25i.

Ive just captured some background footage recorded with my SD MiniDv camcorder, placed text on it and I get exactly the same result. Text is sideways.

Hi dragonblade,

"Although this bit of footage is completely black"

Just curious......why are you adding completely black footage?

Kinda on board here with George. While avoiding the black footage may not solve what's going wrong, it may fix the problem, and that's probably good enough for now.

As far as the text being rotated, this can happen in a few places. Pan/Crop and Track Motion both have the ability to set arbitrary rotation angles. I'm not sure about the Studio version, but Vegas Pro also has an additional attribute for rotating the entire project 90 or 180°. I doubt it's this last one as that would affect the entire project. Track motion would affect an entire track, unless keyframes are added, but, if it was already applied to a track and then forgotten, it might be rather confusing when it affects new material added to that track. I don't think Pan/Crop can be added directly to a legacy text event, but some of the other text generators have their own rotation settings just like Pan/Crop has.

Chienworks,

To confirm.......I'm on SMSP 13.....the pan/crop is available for legacy text. So I can rotate the text 180 degrees (actually any degrees) and then the text runs sideways up and down. Not sure if this is what the OP is getting. I'm sure the OP would have remembered doing this, but I messed around before and shortly forgotten I made an experiment!!

This was exactly my thoughts......

The reason why I shot completely black footage is to use it as a background for the text. I'm not familiar with 'legacy text' and I didn't do anything fancy prior to adding the text. No rotating or anything like that. All I did was select the default text option and added my text.

This is the problem that I'm referring to:

Very bizarre. It would help if we could see the settings in your legacy text window.

There is no need to add black footage. In the Legacy Text window choose background and set the Alpha value (A) to 255. This will make the background a solid color instead of transparent.

I still don't know what is rotating your text though. Have you tried the regular Text generator instead of Legacy Text?
vkmast wrote on 10/29/2015, 12:22 PM
The "regular Text generator" was replaced by "Titles & Text" in Studio versions as of v. 11. Judging by his earlier posts the OP is using MSP 12.

I agree that seeing the settings in the window(s) he's using might help, so would seeing the timeline as well.

One thing that he might/should do is resetting. This does look bizarre indeed.

Which title are you applying? With that, I can try to duplicate your result and perhaps determine what the cause may be.

Here is another method you may like. First, instead of inserting a black video on the timeline, for a black/blank background......simply separate your clips so there is a blank space between the video clips (see screen shot link below). Then drag the Legacy Text title onto the text timeline, as shown. Edit the text to suit, size the length, add fades, etc. and you are done.

If you want to start your video with a text, just slide your first video clip on the timeline to the right to make room for the title and insert the Legacy Text title above it and all the way to the left.

This should get you what you want, but doesn't address why you are getting what you have. Again, please tell us what title you are using, so we can duplicate your issue.

I'm using Sony Movie Studio Platinum 12. Vkmast, the settings I'm using are like the second link you posted. Basically, I go to View – Media Generators – Titles and Text and then select the Default preset. I'm not using the Legacy Text.

Ive just noticed something. If I use the default text settings, the text appears normal. But if I customise the text, it appears sideways. Though I don't really want to use the default settings. The default settings are as follows - Align Left, Font type: Verdana, Font size: 48. So these settings will produce normal looking text. But I would prefer to customise the text to my liking. The problem occurs when I use these settings - Align Center, Font style: Arial Unicode MS, and two rows of text - first row has a font size of 42 and the second row has a font size of 24.

Ive just done some more experimenting. It seems that it's the style of font that is causing the sideways text. I randomly selected different font styles and the text appears normal. But there are a few font styles that cause the text to appear sideways. I wish I could use Arial Unicode MS. Perhaps I could look for a similar kind of font.

Looks like you may have found a bug. Try using Legacy Text to see how it behaves.
vkmast wrote on 10/30/2015, 4:15 AM
@dragonblade,

are you using @Arial Unicode MS or Arial Unicode MS? Do you see any difference? *)
If not, take MSmart's advice.

Google "@ symbol in font names."

Titles & Text is notoriously known to have problems with certain types of fonts though. Search the Pro forum.

dragonblade,

When I use "@Arial Unicode MS" I get the same results as you. If I use "Arial Unicode MS", I get normal display. Is the "Arial Unicode MS" font (as pictured below) close enough to use?
