Trial version seems very buggy

RLaw wrote on 5/15/2020, 6:01 PM

I am having a lot of issues with the Trial version of Vegas Movie Studio (Version 17.0 - Build 103) running on 64-bit Windows10.
I'm wondering if the paid version is actually working properly compared to this trial version.

For example ....
- The overview tutorial will not get past step 6 or 7 without throwing an error.
- The Dashboard has no closing 'X' button so I cannot get rid of it.
  - When I open the "Add and Arrange Media" window, it covers the timeline and there is no way to move it or close it.
  - The program randomly pops up windows with nonsense messages. (for example, one of them warns that I am not logged into my computer as an administrative user ... which I actually am ... but even if I wasn't, I shouldn't need to be an admin user to run any software!!)

This is not a very good trial version at all. There are a lot of issues, and I'd like to know if the paid version is actually better before I spend money on this.
I used to use Vegas Movie Studio a lot when it was owned by Sony, and it was very smooth. Based on this trial version, it seems like it has gone a few steps backwards.

Try and use the Power User Mode and use Add Media... (not Dashboard). It may be a bit more familiar to you. The trial and paid versions are practically similar. You might want to try the Platinum version instead though..

Thanks for the feedback.
I am already using the PowerUser mode.

How do I just remove the dashboard completely?

Click its X in bottom left to remove it. Then save the window layout - View/Windows Layouts. You will need to give your layout a name.

There is no 'X' button at the bottom left. (see attached screenshot)

This is why I'm wondering if the Trial version is different than the paid version.

As I said above, the trial and paid versions are practically similar. You're right about the Dashboard. The option to remove Dashboard that Eric refers to is only in the Platinum version. The basic version is rather restricted.

Yes, after playing around and checking the image Ryan posted I realised he's using the Basic version.

@RLaw Give the Platinum version a try. If you decide to purchase, the extra few dollars for Platinum is, in my opinion, well worthwhile.

OK, I've purchased the Platinum version because I could not render a movie longer than 2 minutes with the Trial version. Now I'm overwhelmed with the variety of output files and templates available in the 'Render As' window! ha ha

Which file format & template would you recommend from Vegas as a "catch-all" for most regular family purposes? (i.e not professional level movies) To start with, I'll simply be streaming home movies on a smart TV through my WiFI or from a USB stick or maybe sharing with friends on a DVD, for example.

Thanks again

The best is mp4 but it is dependend on your hardware which codec for the mp4 can be used the best way.
So give here all your hardware specs and the type of sourcefiles and you get the best solution.

To make your choice quite easy, first try this render option for rendering playable renders for smart TV from USB stick, before diving into customizing render templates.
