Trialing Another Version of VEGAS Pro 20

MH7 wrote on 12/16/2022, 8:28 AM

Okay, so you might be looking at the the heading of this post of mine and wondering what I’m talking about. Well, you see, I’ve been deciding on whether or not I want to upgrade to VEGAS Pro 20 (from my VEGAS Pro 18, more specifically even VEGAS Post 20 (although, as @Reyfox and I both found out, you can only trial VEGAS Pro 20 in the VEGAS Post 20, which is kinda odd if I’m to be completely honest, and not the rest of the suite of applications that it comes with; as Reyfox found out, you’d have to pay to trial the whole suite and then ask for a refund if you didn’t like any of the other applications; kind of silly if you ask me; not trying to be negative just stating a fact).

However, as trials do, my 30-day trial of VEGAS Post 20 ran out. Therefore, I’m wanting to know if it’s possible for me to then trial VEGAS Pro or VEGAS Edit so that I can get another 30-day trial of VEGAS Pro 20 since, due to other reasons, I didn’t get to trial VEGAS Post 20 for all those 30 days. So, is this legitimately possible?

Thanks in advance for any help regarding this.

Cheers,

MH7

Considering the version of VEGAS Pro included in all of those is identical to VEGAS Post, with the only difference being bundled apps and plugins, I'd think not.

Systems:

Desktop

AMD Ryzen 7 1800x 8 core 16 thread at stock speed

64GB 3000mhz DDR4

Geforce RTX 3090

Windows 10

Laptop:

ASUS Zenbook Pro Duo 32GB (9980HK CPU, RTX 2060 GPU, dual 4K touch screens, main one OLED HDR)

Well, if that’s the case, that’s unfortunate. For how much a did trial it, it wasn’t too bad. The only negative being that when trying to use one of the new OpenGL transitions on my computer (see my sig for PC specs), on a 4K25 (4K 25fps) video, with the videos being recorded in Sony’s XAVC-S CoDec, VEGAS Pro stopped responding and I had to open up Task Manager and force it closed, end it’s process.

Before on the forum the developers talked about a different policy on trials as Vegas is moving to a continuous delivery model where features are added throughout the product's lifetime so it's problematic if users can only test it once. This hasn't been resolved though.

I'd suggest doing a 1 mo. subscription if you're really not sure if it's for you.

A trial should be "legitimately possible" if you have another capable device.

I have heard about this. Some people thought that VEGAS Pro 19 was going to be the last version of VEGAS Pro with them moving to continuous delivery (I’m guessing like DaVinci Resolve), but then they launched VEGAS Pro 20. So, will this continuous delivery be much like DaVinci Resolve Studio where you pay once and just get continuous updates without having to pay for each complete new version?

Then my thoughts go to the subscription model of VEGAS Pro. Would that just be ended because, if they do the same as DV, I don’t imagine that people would go the subscription route if they could pay once and get continuous updates for the life of the application or program.

I'd suggest doing a 1 mo. subscription if you're really not sure if it's for you.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I’m not comfortable with doing that, to be honest.

This is highly unlikely, as there's no way that Magix could keep their doors open if they only make money off of the initial sale of the software. We have to keep in mind that they aren't using this software to help sell their hardware like BlackMagic is, they don't have that advantage here... the more likely model would be something like getting a year of update service with your perpetual purchase, and then you can buy additional years of updates from there at a lower upgrade price. It'll function pretty much the same as upgrading to new versions of VEGAS Pro each year, but you won't have to install a different version each year... just updates to 20. Then the team can focus on dropping new features the moment they are done, vs. having to save them for the next big numbered version release so they have enough bullet points on the list to attract new buyers.

Then my thoughts go to the subscription model of VEGAS Pro. Would that just be ended because, if they do the same as DV, I don’t imagine that people would go the subscription route if they could pay once and get continuous updates for the life of the application or program.

The sub model also carries with it the benefit of including the online services like online collaboration with other editors, the online audio/video stock clip library, cloud storage, AI text to speech and speech to text, transferring video from the VEGAS Pro app, etc.

Okay, good point. I had forgotten about that. I guess it’s a bit like Apple. They can afford to give away their operating system software for their computers and mobile devices (i.e. iPad, iPhone, etc) because they make the hardware.

Oh, okay. That’d still be good. Not having wait for a new version number but, instead, get feature updates sooner would be good.

The sub model also carries with it the benefit of including the online services like online collaboration with other editors, the online audio/video stock clip library, cloud storage, AI text to speech and speech to text, transferring video from the VEGAS Pro app, etc.

Okay, fair enough.

They actually already moved to that style of updating just prior to the release of VEGAS 20... this is why 20 has been getting incremental feature updates... like the HSL Color curves being added to the color grading panel and the update to the new VST engine, for instance, among other features... more stuff is being added with each new update (at a surprising rate, I gotta add, they're really working hard behind the scenes!)... so VEGAS 20 will continue to steadily evolve every few months. This is also why at launch, VEGAS 20 was lighter on new features than previous numbered versions... they weren't holding them back for new releases anymore.

So, does that mean that VEGAS 20 is the last numbered version of the software and we will now see just updates to the software and not complete new versions, like VEGAS 21, VEGAS 22, VEGAS 23, VEGAS 24, etc. or am I not understanding correctly?

It seems that is the way things are going, though I don't know the exact details of how it all will work when it comes time to pay for new upgrades, I'm just speculating.

As @fr0sty suggests, only time (or team) will tell or confirm.
