Trying to Register Movie Studio Plat 12 and other Sony Vegas versions

Brian-Bullock wrote on 7/13/2025, 4:52 AM

I've sent ticket requests to support twice in two weeks and have yet to get an answer, and I really need this product to work on my new machine. I've installed Movie Studio Platinum 12 and now it wants me to register the product before I can use it.

The problem is that the server used to do the registering appears to be down (maybe dead?) with the error 12002 and so I have no viable means of progressing.

What can be done about this?

I just tried to register a Sony-era Vegas Pro 13 and I also get a registration failure:

... so it would seem that the old Sony registration/activation is down.

As this forum is a user-to-user forum, none of your fellow Vegas users have any access to the registration/activation system so it's going to have to be a matter of keeping in touch with the Vegas Support team and await their response.

A possible alternative is, especially if you have a good modern computer, is to use the VMS12 serial number and upgrade to Vegas Pro 22 with lower upgrade pricing. Vegas Pro should be able to open VMSP12 .vf project files so your older VMSP12 should still be able to be worked on. Vegas Pro 22 has a 30 days free trial so there's the opportunity for you to try it out for yourself

I appreciate the alternative but I'm in no financial position for a good while for such an upgrade... Perhaps definately later though, thanks for the suggestion!

I'm also just now figuring out Magix (where I downloaded the installer) and Vegas are two different teams (I was sent from the Magix forum to over here to repost my question.

I'm assuming the support crew are also different persons? Meaning i should maybe repost my report ticket over here instead of the Magix site?

All this is very silly and confusing :P

For the Vegas Support team, click on the Support tab in the forum header and then click on the Vegas Pro logo - this will take you to the Vegas Help Centre where there is a Contact Support 'SEND E-MAIL' button at the bottom of the page.

The same error here trying to register SVMSP 12. Will try again later.

Possibly this may also apply: "after an unspecified number of installations on different or updated PCs you may need to contact support to reset your "installation count".(Sony versions).(From this FAQ item 9.)

that is a possibility. However there is that second option in the registration app that lets you register from another computer by spitting out a portable html document that auto directs you to the webpage that would generate an activation code. That page doesn't work anymore :P

So this is definitely a server issue I'm thinking

VEGASDerek wrote on 7/13/2025, 12:12 PM

I will reach out to the server team and try to find out what is happening here. This should still be working.

Thank you for your service, that would be awesome!

Brian-Bullock wrote on 7/13/2025, 8:20 PM

I eventually caved and dropped a loan on the upgrade package (the perpetual license) I hope to god its worth it (and I'm sure that it is all things considering)

Still, this server problem should be resolved for other legacy software users. I might still go back and tinker with MSP12 if I find Vegas is missing a feature I need or something :P

GWB-User wrote on 7/16/2025, 9:30 AM

Same issue here with licensing and with Magix support!! The licensing server reaches out to https://www.mediasoftwareapps.com/ which is down right now and has been for days if not weeks. Starting to think that old license holders are just SOL.

VEGASDerek wrote on 7/16/2025, 10:18 AM

So what we do know on our end is that the registration server is still active, but the old applications are trying to connect to the old Sony url (mediasoftwareapps.com), which, since the Magix acquisition, simply redirects to the new Magix server. At this point, the Sony server appears to be shut down (especially since the last remnants of the SCS office have now been closed). Those experiencing a problem do have an offline registration option...but I do not know exactly how that is done. Our support team should be able to give instructions on how to do that, so I would suggest opening a support ticket.

I will also see about trying to get the instructions for this and posting them in a pinned message here on the forums.

GWB-User wrote on 7/16/2025, 11:10 AM

Thanks VegasDerek. OP and I raised several tickets with Magix support and have not heard back (been about two weeks now). Was anyone able to get through? I cannot find a number to call either. Would really like to know that workaround.

VEGASDerek wrote on 7/16/2025, 11:46 AM

I checked with the support team...you have not gotten a response because your tickets were sent to the Video Deluxe team. Likely some confusion between Vegas Movie Studio and Magix Movie Studio, which are unrelated products.

GWB-User wrote on 7/16/2025, 3:36 PM

Thank you very much for looking into that. Is there a way to contact the right team or do I ask someone like vegasDerek to transfer my ticket?

VEGASDerek wrote on 7/16/2025, 4:53 PM

The Vegas support team is aware of your ticket, so hopefully you will get a response soon.

Still no success in getting my Sony MS Platinum 12 activated on another Win11 device, despite meticulously following the latest advice on the Forum Messages section.

Support ticket created.

Brian-Bullock wrote on 7/21/2025, 4:22 PM

yeah I've actually tried this method before creating this thread here and I could not get it to work. It just kept refusing the ID that the software installer was spitting out. And then I could not for a while figure out how to get a new one because the installer was not giving me the option other than to create the html doc that redirects you to the dead site that would give you the activation code. I was able to locate the computer id in the redirect url but even that did not work.

Sorry for neglecting to mention this at the start. :P

Following the procedure given in Forum Messages to activate SVP13, the Create Activation Code process did not accept the Machine ID (Computer ID) as given in SVP's activation window:

@vkmast Just a thought but does the Computer ID you are given to enter match the Device ID that appears in your pc's Settings/System/About under Device Specifications?

EDIT: I've just checked the About details of my VP21 on this PC and find the "Machine ID" shown isn't the Device ID mentioned above but actually the "Device Name", which also appears under Device Specifications. This is something you call your machine when first setting it up.

Dexcon wrote on 7/22/2025, 4:59 AM

I tried coding in the Device ID and Product ID numbers from Device Specifications both the other day and just now (and just now the computer name as well):

... with the same result:

Invalid computer ID

The computer ID you entered is incorrect.
Please check your entry

@Dexcon @EricLNZ I tested those "options" earlier as well with the same result...

Edit: I also tested the answer given here. The one "likely" address (from several) that I tried did not work either. The same with UUID.

GWB-User wrote on 7/22/2025, 9:26 AM

Still no word from my support ticket. I assume its been closed by now. Going back to my original comment, without a working licensing server, we are out of luck. Not that I was keen on using 10+ year old software but it should continue to work.

vkmast wrote on 7/22/2025, 9:49 AM

I just got a(n AI?) reply from VEGAS Support. Their advice was the same document that is listed in the Support FAQs and basically also in the new Forum message. Judging by some users' messages here it does not seem to help.

I sent Support another reply with a link to this thread (particularly mentioning @Dexcon's 1st screenshot ).

Would be great to know where all the users (so far) posting here went wrong.

VEGASDerek wrote on 7/22/2025, 10:26 AM

We have confirmed on the website that the computer ID field is not sending data properly. We are working on fixing that. Internally this registration method is working, so it is a problem on the website at the moment.
